A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, usually done by a gynecologist. Hysterectomy may be total (removing the body and cervix of the uterus) or partial (also called supra-cervical). Although there are conservative alternatives, hysterectomy is performed for uterine fibroids, pelvic pain, pelvic relaxation, heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding, and cancer.

Ovaries shutting down

Hi everyone, I was reading online 2 days ago that after 2 years without a uterus to be attached to, ovaries die as they don't have an adequate blood supply anymore...... This shocked the heck out of me..! Has anyone heard of that..? If so... whats the point of leaving our ovaries in if it will only buy us 2 years..?
I had my LAVH 6 weeks ago and I was left with one ovary, and its hard enough knowing that my remanding ovary has to do the work of two now which must be a strain in itself.... but if its gonna die anyway in 2 years why has no one told me that I might need hormones in the very near future.... How would I know if i needed them or should I just accept menopause and all the joys that come along with it..? Any ideas or experiences with this...?

It is true.

Women are experiencing hormonal problems following tubal ligation.

PS you just have to keep tuned to your body for the "signals" of menopause and, get your hormone levels checked at least once per year.

That is what I plan to do.

Hi Sharon! I also read that the uterus is the largest blood supply to the ovaries. When the uterus is removed, there is less blood flow to them and that 50% of women that keep their ovaries will go into menopause earlier than they would have. I specifically asked my doctor about this. He said it is not true, as the ovaries have their own blood supply and that I do not need to worry, as I will most likely go into menopause whenever my body was scheduled to. But I agree with noneareleft... keep an eye on your body if you notice changes. You can always have your hormone levels checked. My friend had a hysterectomy and kept her ovaries. She still hasn't gone into menopause and she is near 50. She had her hysterectomy at 36.

Wow thanks guys... I'm scared of hitting menopause as it means you r not protected by estrogen and the good stuff that protects us against heart disease and all the other stuff....? Ekk!
