Hysterectomy Support Group
A hysterectomy is the surgical removal of the uterus, usually done by a gynecologist. Hysterectomy may be total (removing the body and cervix of the uterus) or partial (also called supra-cervical). Although there are conservative alternatives, hysterectomy is performed for uterine fibroids, pelvic pain, pelvic relaxation, heavy or abnormal menstrual bleeding, and cancer.
I am so sorry you are going through all that and come here to ease you mind and instead are faced with an onslaught of scary stories.
I would suggest that if anything you've read frightens you, you take it to your doctor so he or she can discuss it with you.
I didn't have your situation ( I had a large fibroid) but I had everything removed and I don't take HRT. I feel good.
My Mother had a hysterectomy in 1974. she is now 82 and on no meds what so ever. All 3 of my sisters had hysterectomies in the early 1990's.. they are happy and vibrant as well.
I hope this helps.
thanks so much for responding and not passing judgment on my decision :)
It has been about 8 months and my horomones are still adjusting, but i know i will get there eventually. I have been able to have sex and orgasm, something i was afraid i would loose forever.
Did you know that the risk of prolapse is far less in women who never had children? We all know now that meshes are bad so as long as your surgen will not be using that i think you should be in good shape. You will also reduce your risk of developing several cancers including breast cancer, ovarian cancer etc.
Because we with endo have suffered pain you have to stay realistic, some of us will have nerve pain but i figured it is better than living a bed ridden life. I have already been able to do more than i could pre-surgery, but i do still have pain.
I hope this helps. Shame one the other women here who made their own decisions whithout being prepared or having done their homework. Sounds like they should have thought it through more ahead of time. I think you have done your homework however.
Best of luck to you. I am still working on figuring out my horomones but for now i am on estrogen oral only because progesterone seems to have been making me ill.
I'm glad you've so far had a positive experience have you noticed anything negative in regards to hormones?
Did you keep your cervix?
I am going to see and endocrineologist next moth. I have gained weight, but I also have a thyroid condition. I have a decreased desire, but I am going to tell my doctor about that. I am sure she will recommend a smal dose of testosterone for that, as it seems to be more common than you would think to use this horomone.
Post-surgery you will be sore. Choose a comfortable bed or couch to hang out on. Try to stay ahead of the pain and don't be afraid to take the pain killers the doctor prescribes to you. Follow all of the restrictions that the doctor gives to you. Try to walk a bit around the house as it will help to relieve the gas. Take Gas-X to try to relieve this and the stool softeners they recommend.
I also had endometriosis, painful and heavy periods, anemia, etc. and suffered for at least 2 1/2 weeks out of the month. It was no way to live. Although I did have an unforseen complication after the surgery, I still feel it was the best decision that my doctor and I made. I am about a year out from the surgery and I feel awesome! I am in the best shape I have ever been.
As far as HRT, since I had a total hysterectomy, I did opt for it. I take Minivelle and have no side effects whatsoever. It did help with the surgical menopause I immediately went into.
I applaud you for standing up to the negative women on here. They do not see it this way but you were only asking questions not looking for whether you should do it or not. You, as well as I, definitely did your homework before you made this decision. It is tough because every time a new person posts, they seem to be all over them. It really turns me off too.
It is a personal decision that you and your doctor make and every one will have a different experience. I can only wish you luck and a good and speedy recovery!
