Any mammal can have a thyroid problem(cats are particularly prone to hyperthyroidism). But the downside is that it soemtimes is not as easily treated. The reason why your vet ordered a more comprehensive set of tests is that most of the time these days they have the equipment onsite to run the tests themselves.

Yea I knew that dogs could suffer from thyroid conditions. It was more of just the fact that I was diagnosed with thyroid disease last month and If my dog is having thyroid problems what are the chances that the dog and the owner would be diagnosed within a month of each other!! Just seems unlikely but with my luck this year anything is possible so yea...I am waiting for his results the doctors office called this morning and said they should have his results back later on today.

Lynne thanks for your reply. Do you have a pet with a thyroid imbalance? I hope my pup doesnt have it. The bloodwork is expensive...too expensive to be getting redone every 6 months!

I had a cat that I lost to hyperthyroidism; we were waiting to get her test results back before starting her on meds. From what I have been told since, it probably worked out for the best; the meds make them sick, too, and she probably would have been pretty miserable on them. Did not make it any easier to lose her, though. Just kept her from suffering.

I hope your little dog is alright. I understand completely about the expense; ours are bad enough, huh? I have had animals with other chronic conditions, and the expense does get to be a bit much at times. But, they are worth it, I think. Good luck!

My dog has it too. Hes doing great since starting treatment hes acting like a puppy again. I had no real problems with him.

My! May we have the number of your vet? Do you think he/she would see people? All joking aside now, how is your dog? Not hypothyroid, I hope!

Hey Sandra! I wish he would see humans! He practices both western and eastern medicine. Great doctor! I see him once a month so my dog can have acupuncture. Great news - my dog does not have hypothyroidism!! Turns out that the problem was his food. I added Salmon to his diet and he appears to have an allergy! I took that out of his diet so I am just waiting to see if his hair grows back, but the rashes are fading! Yeay!

My dog sheds an insane amount. She is a shelter dog that is terrified of everything. I just figured she was nuerotic but now I have to wonder. To bad she isn't covered by my Tricare insurance.

I had ASPCA dog insurance for my dog but it wasn't worth it I ended up paying more for things. The blood work at a nyc vets office ended up costing me $180 for a full thyroid workup...
