Hello everyone. I need to come on to vent. My doctor recommended I go see a psycyatrist because the antidepressants she prescribed for me don't seem to be helping much and she felt that by going to a psycyartrist, he might know of better combos to help with the depression I am having. So I agree. I go to this guy, he asks what he can do for me and I told him that I have hypothyroidism and am being tested for other illnesses too. I said I am tired all of the time and..... OFF HE WENT. You see everyone, I am a big girl, have been since puberty. I also have PCOS which has contributed to my weight issues. Anyway, he was off and running. I am tired all of the time because I am fat. Period. I am fat therfore I must have sleep apnea. Period. I am fat therefore my heart must be bad (dispite my telling him that not two months ago I had numerous heart tests done and my heart is fine). So all of my problems are not due to hypothyroidism, nor any other medical issue. It is because I am fat. I got up and stormed out of his office. On the way I told him that all of my issues came on suddenly and I have been fat my whole life!
Am I kidding myself?? I feel I am tired all of the time and have no stamina anymore, have brain fog, memory trouble etc which all came on suddenly because of hypo or another reason not just because I am fat!
So I am done. I am not going to any other doctors other than my family doc and my endo. I am supposed to go and have a ton of tests done for other things but I am done. I am not going to put myself thru that anymore. Yes, I am fat, yes I know it is not healthy, I get that. But I am so damn sick and tired of doctors blaming EVERYTHING on my weight. IF I have an illenss it is because I am fat. IF a thin person has the same illenss it is because they are poor unfortunate souls.

So sorry to hear that. First of all, you are tired because you have hypothyroidism...thats one of the main symptoms of an underactive thyroid. If your doc doesnt get that, then they are just not knowlegeable on the thyroid. Are your thyroid levels in the right range? If they are off, that can cause depression. It all goes hand in hand. The weight issues can also be related to the thyroid. I would focus on getting your thyroid levels in balance and things should start getting better. I see a psychologist every two weeks bc I developed anxiety from my thyroid imbalance. It has really helped me mostly bc my therapist HAS hypo and knows exactly what I have been through. I love her and she has helped me sooo much. Therapists are good if you can find the right one...maybe search around for a different one who deals with thyroid related depression/anxiety and someone who is compassionate and listens...afterall, that is their job. Their job is not to make judements and make you feel worse about yourself! I cant believe he did that. I would have stormed out too. You have to shop docs until you find the right ones. Trust me, I know, I have been to like 10 different ones until I found the ones who get it. I hope things start looking up for you. Dont get down about it; you have a thyroid condition and it can make you feel tired, foggy, depressed, among many other things. Just know you are not alone and you will get through this!!!! Hugs!

I agree. The good ones are few and far between. You have to kiss a lot of toads to find a prince. He was just one of the toads. I would ask for my money back. And be sure to let your doctor know how you were treated so she won't refer any more of her patients to him.

Oh, and I'm fat too. I didn't know that being fat causes hypothyroidism. I thought it was the other way around.

It took me many doctors to find the one who was willing to run the right test. I just think of the bad ones as still practicing, trying to get it right. Some have a long way to go.

I went to a GYN like that one time. I hate male Dr.'s they can never see anything but fat.

Ok well first of all, you should probably report that guy. haha

I am in school to be a counselor and trust me we are not taught to act that way.

if he was a psychiatrist that is the wrong person for you, often psychiatrists aren't really trained in helping someone through counseling, they are the psychologists who can fill out prescriptions, a glorified doctor. So if you want to get someone who will listen to you with a kind ear look for someone with an MSW (masters in social work), a counselor.

Being overweight does not cause hypothyroidism you are right, it IS the other way around.

Good luck with everything trust me you will find a therapist who is right for you!

Helpful hint, good counselors are taught that after a session they should ask the patient if there is anything they could do better to help them....so if you get asked this...you are probably in the right place :D

Thank you all for your comments. I have been told by others too that I should report him. It ticked me off. He's a psycyatrist and he was talking like he was a flippen medical doctor. I wasn't there to get medical advise, I wanted help with the depression.. GRRRR. I have been on thyroid meds for a while now, and my levels are all normal but the only symptom that has been helped is the cold intolerance. Still have the fatigue, low stamina, brain fog, memory trouble, etc, etc, etc.. My doctor wants to test for other illnesses that cause these symptoms but I am done.. I know that may sound silly of me, but I am just finished with doctors that take one look at me and say all my problems are because I am fat. So, I think I will just plug along the best I can, and try and get some quality of life. My family doctor, who has been AMAZING thru all of this is moving away, so this is not helping the depression thing for me too. Now I have to see a brand new doctor and have the "it's all because you are fat" thing happen all over again. This truley sucks..
