Hypothyroidism Support Group
Hypothyroidism is the disease state caused by insufficient production of thyrohormone by the thyroid gland. There are several distinct causes for chronic hypothyroidism, the most common being Hashimoto's thyroiditis and hypothyroidism following radioiodine therapy for hyperthyroidism. Advanced hypothyroidism may cause severe complications, the most serious one of which is...
I thought you might like to read a different point of view. My doctor doesn't like the armour and put me on a combination of synthroid and cytomel. The cytomel is the man-made version of armour. This is my Dr's point of view. Since the armour is a natural hormone it can be like our own thryoid's production of that hormone - some days it works ok and some days it doesn't work at all and then some days it only partially works. In other words the natural armour may have a too large of a dose of the T3 in it in one dosage and then again it might only be 1/2 of the amount of T3 that your body needs, or it could not have any of the T3 in it at all in that particular dosage. That's why my Dr. prefers the synthetic version (cytomel) because since it is man-made you know each time you take a dosage you are getting the same amount of T3 each time. My Dr. also explained to me that I may respond quicker to the Armour since it is natural, but he felt the cytomel was a better choice for me even if it did take a few more months until I started feeling the benefit of the synthetic cytomel. I had quite a bit of trouble with my heart racing and beating too fast as he slowly increased the dosages on both the synthroid and cytomel. Several times I felt like I was having a heart attack so that was another reason he didn't want me on the armour as it is harder to control the T3 levels you get from taking it.
Anyway, it took me over a year until we found the right combination of dosages of my synthroid and cytomel. That was 5 yrs ago and I am still on the same dosages today. I now have fibromyalgia along with several other health problems which also create some of the same symptoms as the hypothyroidism, but my thyroid blood test levels are within the recommended normal levels. For me, I feel better on the lower side of the normal range. I certainly am no Dr, and I can only go on my own experience, but in my opinion if you feel good on the armour stay on it, but if you experience rapid heart beats or you have too many days of jumping between feeling good on armour and feeling bad, you might want to ask your doctor if a synthetic alternative like cytomel would be worth trying. Of course, this is simply my opinion/suggestion and I've given you all something else to simply think about. I do know that only we can tell how our bodies feel so we must be our own best advocate for our better health. Hopefully you have all found great Drs who are willing to work with you until you obtain your best health possible. I also believe that our doctors are only as good as God allows them to be in each of our situations. I believe my faith in God has helped me as much as my Dr.

l have tried all the treatments and combination of treatments going in the 3 yrs l have been diagnosed and l have never felt well in all that time. Then as a last resort my endo prescribed Armour and it as different as night is to day, l feel that l have got my personality back, the brain fog has lifted and l might have a future to look forward to.
l still don't feel 100%, but much better than l have on Levo or cytomel or levo and cytomel.
Doctors promote the myth that Armour is unreliable because it is a natural product and fluctuates in potency, this is not true at all. lt is a FDA approved medication that is made to strict guidelines and is tested for correct potency every step of the way, just the same standards are in force as for any medication.
l would say to anyone who who is hypothyroid and struggling to feel well that you have a right and a duty to yourself to try the small number of medicines available to you and see for yourself which suits you Keep all your options open.

I'm much happier on Armour. At least I no longer have major foggy days or feel like I'm going to lapse into a coma. And my TSH tests come back "normal", which makes my doctor happy.
