Hyperparathyroidism Support Group
Hyperparathyroidism is overactivity of the parathyroid glands resulting in excess production of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Increased PTH consequently leads to increased serum calcium (hypercalcemia) due to 1) increased bone resorption, allowing flow of calcium from bone to blood, 2) reduces renal clearance of calcium, and 3) increases intestinal calcium absorption.
I've been doing research on my own symptoms, and came to realize that many look for symptoms of hyperparathyroidism, when in fact, the symptom of that is hypercalcemia. Having found sporadic success looking under hyperparathyroidism, I changed to searching symptoms of hypercalcemia and found much more success.
Your physician is going to be looking to first confirm the hypercalcemia, then to find the cause of that. 90% of the time the cause is primary hyperparathyroidism...but that must be confirmed case-by-case. My advice is to corellate your symptoms with those of hypercalcemia, and allow the MDs to diagnose the cause.
I hate it it's sucking my life down the drain!! Trying to cope with my symptoms it's hard at times no medications are working for me right now.
