Hyperparathyroidism is overactivity of the parathyroid glands resulting in excess production of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Increased PTH consequently leads to increased serum calcium (hypercalcemia) due to 1) increased bone resorption, allowing flow of calcium from bone to blood, 2) reduces renal clearance of calcium, and 3) increases intestinal calcium absorption.

Latest post-op labs, suggestions?

Greetings,

I met with my surgeon for my 3 week follow up. My vitamin D is up to 34 now, but my PTH is only 11.7 and my calcium is 8.2 and my ionized calcium is 1.09 (range 1.17-1.32)

She says that she wants my remaining gland to "wake up" more so she doesn't want me to keep taking mega doses of calcium, but wants me to crank up the D so there is more absorption. I keep having tingling in the morning especially. Not sure what to do to get this straight. Anyone else have any input, someone who may also have had difficulty getting things back to normal?

So my last labs were 8.7 for the calcium, but my PTH is still only 12, so the endo wants to check active vitamin D levels to see if my liver is converting D3 properly. If active levels are fine, I am to take HCTZ in hopes that calcium will be retained and eventually PTH will come up. If the active D is low, then I am supposed to take calcitriol until the PTH comes up. I hope the remaining gland isn't permanently damaged. However, since it seems to be functioning a little, I guess it's not gone.

Hi Brenden. Looks like your calcium and pth is moving in the right directions .I have not had surgery yet, so can't comment on what you are going thur.Seems like your endo has a handle on it .Are you feeling better? Do you feel worse with the low calcium? Take care.

Hi Bonezzz,

Thanks for asking. There are days I thnk I feel better and then there are days I thnk it's not much different. On the whole I would say things are improved. I guess I won't be able to tell if the low calcium is affecting me until I can compare it to a normal level. We'll see.
