Hyperparathyroidism Support Group
Hyperparathyroidism is overactivity of the parathyroid glands resulting in excess production of parathyroid hormone (PTH). Increased PTH consequently leads to increased serum calcium (hypercalcemia) due to 1) increased bone resorption, allowing flow of calcium from bone to blood, 2) reduces renal clearance of calcium, and 3) increases intestinal calcium absorption.
I never heard that about BP and melatonin. I have HBP as well. I searched the net and found that it seems to be true for people on procardia (I think a betablocker?) but there seems to be some suggestion that it may help lower BP in others. I have never used it, but I too have horrible sleep problems, although I do think that on the whole I sleep better now after surgery. I also found that taking a pain pill before going to bed helped me sleep, even though pain pills tend to make my hyper. I think because my back doesn't wake me up during the night that way. However, I have a very llimited supply of them so I can't use them for sleep. What have you tried for sleep aid?
Regards, Brenden.
I haven't really tried any type of sleep aid mainly because I also worry about becoming dependent. I too slept well after surgery. Thanks for your response. It may be pain waking me up but I'm not sure. I'm sorry to hear you have problems with your back.
Sleeping well is so basic! I have a CPAP mask and machine that helps me. It humidifies the air I breathe at night and I need it badly. Without it I wake with a migraine every time. At first Drs. gave me an Oxygen machine with humidity to breathe at night but that wasn't enough. I had a 'sleep study' done and for me I do better with the CPAP. But I wake up many times from sleep and I still have tremors/shakes/RLS/whatever... a lot. Dr prescribed ropinarole- for this but doesn't help much. So I quit it. Does anyone besides me have involuntary shakes or jerks in their bodies when trying to go to sleep or wake up? Can't tell if its because of high PTH or my older age or ? Or maybe its my daily exercise?
I have became accustomed to it.
Is parachild still here. If so, I'd ask her on the vit. D3 supplement, it's so different for everybody. In fact, don't listen to me and believe me on anything, these are just suggestions to check out. However, I can tell you the magnesium really really helped my pain. normalparanot
