Human papillomavirus is a diverse group of DNA-based viruses that infect the skin and mucous membranes of humans. More than 100 different human papillomavirus (HPV) types have been characterized. Some HPV types cause benign skin warts, or papillomas, for which the virus family is named. HPVs associated with the development of such "common warts" are transmitted...

I found out I had HPV a little over a year ago. I contacted the last 2 sexual partners I had and one of them said they thought they had something but couldn't afford to get checked or didn't want to get checked or something. I never really found out if they ever got checked. I never followed up with any of the other sexual partners I've had because I was pretty sure it was that person. I know it is pretty late in the game, but I am worried that I made the wrong decision not to tell my past partners to get checked.
It had been a few months in between my last sexual partner and the one before, and the symptoms of HPV didn't show up until about 2 months after my last partner, which is why I thought it was them.
I guess I'm wondering if it makes any sense to stir the pot and ask people from my very past to get checked. Would it do any good? I am very embarrassed still even though it's been quite a while since I've found out I have this disease. I don't want to cause any hatred or unnecessary embarrassment if I don't need to. Please help me.

I have told 2 recent partners one just didn't respond and the other one said thanks for letting me know and asked if I was okay which was cool. I have not told my most recent ex partner though I know that I need to I just feel weird about it I guess. Good luck!

I told my last boyfriend he said well I haven't had any symptoms and brushed it off. My boyfriend currently didn't take it so lightly and we ended up breaking up over it. It was awkward and weird, but it's better they know then not. If it was over a couple of years since you were with them, honestly I wouldn't bother. My doctor told me not to inform anyone which I thought was wrong. Since it works out of most people's systems in a couple years and you virtually have no idea where you picked it up from I do see the point in stirring the pot. I mean you can go all they way back to guys you just messed around with and had contact with since it doesn't require intercourse.

From all that I have researched men can't be tested for HPV...

This is a tough one because chances are good the person you got this from did not know they had it. I talked with the last two people I slept with. The last guy had a visible wart which is how I found out I had it. He gave me a story about out he had not slept with anyone but his wife (they were separated). She denied cheating on him (apparently they had not slept together for "years"--oookkkk. Right but whatever. So I know he figured it was me. So I spoke with the previous guy who I had been sleeping with when I had my last pap smear (normal) he was unconcerned and has not told me he has had any issues since. As for anyone prior to that I figure what is the point? I have no firm set idea when I got this if I did not get it from the last person I slept with. I had no idea if I had gotten earlier (ll normal pap smears) so it is not like I was maliciously out there trying to hurt people. I figure why freak people out potentially unnecessarily when I can't confirm I even exposed them? I know now and I can promise you any person I consider dating will know before we even graze pinkies.

OK I think if your going to have sex and you have warts you need to talk about it to your partners as you are contagious and can pass it as I was told by my GP. But say you clear the virus no warts and your GP gives you the green light. I don't see why you need to bring it up the past, Plus every doctor I have seen has said the same thing that 80% of the population has it and dose not know. Having sex is risky its up to you and your partners to protect yourself you can say did you get all your shots like the Gardasil, Hepatitis A & B? Ect.. I can only talk about myself on this I wish my past partners would have said something I was stupid I just did not know anything about HPV it was new to me! I just got every year the STD blood test I though that was all you needed I do blame my doctor for not talking about it I guess its why i got a new one now! so its really up to you what you feel is best to do.

You are doing the right thing by contacting the people you have had sex with within the last few months and that is very brave of you! HPV is common and if your ex doesn't have symptoms and hasn't contacted you, there is no reason to stir the pot. My ex had symptoms, broke up with me and started seeing someone 2 weeks later. I developed symptoms in the meantime and was infuriated to find out that he had discussed it with this new girl but not me, the person who he had dated for nearly a year. Be brave and continue to do what is best for you!

it was a very embarrassing, humbling experience but i went as far back as i thought was possibly necessary & told each past partner plus my recent partner (ended once this came to light). regardless if they could've been the giver or the receiver, i'm doing my part & giving them the information. what they do with it is up to them. it's worth the embarrassment & hurt from them ignoring me or treating me badly to know i could save someone else from going through this ordeal.
