At the moment, I am on Medi-Cal through the state because I did not have any insurance when I got sick and ended up in the hospital last year (which is how I found out about my status). However, I am finishing up my degrees in the next few months and have already started sending out my resumes.
I am curious as to how job related insurance works being positive. Will they ask for a physical, medical records, etc? I am just scared of finding a decent career and getting turned down for insurance from my employer. Since I have waitressed and been a bartender for the past 15 years, I was never offered insurance through my employers.
If anyone can let me know how this has worked in your situation, I would appreciate it, just so I know what to be expecting!

When you stop with your CaliMed, you should get a bunch of paperwork in the mail. One such item will be a Certificate of Credible Coverage (COCC)
*SAVE THIS DOCUMENT*.
This document provides proof that you had (public) insurance and you will not be subject to a pre-existing clause. If the insurance company attempts to slap you with denied claims due to pre-existing condition, you can dispute it, and provide them with a copy of the COCC.
As long as 63 days has not passed since your Cali-Med lapsed and the new insurance became effective, you are golden. (This is part of the "HIPAA" law that everyone thinks is just for privacy.. it is much, much more).
Also, you will want to seriously consider working for an employer with >= 50 employees (Ask during your interview how many people work there) This gives you rights under FMLA, ADA that you would not have otherwise (< 50 isn't a "Large" company). It also provides for a change in how the insurance company can rate (charge) your group coverage.
