When it comes to cholesterol issues, understanding the inverse relationship between thyroid hormone and cholesterol is important.
There are two primary thyroid hormones circulating in the blood. T4 and T3. Of the two, T4 is basicly inactive and doesn't impact cholesterol levels like T3 does.
T3, ( short for triiodothyronine) is the active thyroid hormone and it puts the sparkle in your eyes and the kick in your step. It is in the body in micro amounts, but very potent. Like tossing gasoline on a campfire, T3 can crank up your metabolism and drop cholesterol and triglycerides fast.
But the Free unbound T3 circulating in the blood and available for use by the body rarely gets measured. And low T3 syndrome gets missed. Yet the American Heart association reports that people who have low T3 syndrome who have heart attacks have significantly better chances of survival after the heart attack when the missing T3 hormone is treated.

Insufficient amounts of thyroid hormone in the blood is treated with oral thyroid hormone. Usually one pill in the morning.
replacement thyroid hormone is a prescription drug used to treat hypothyroidism. This would have to be diagnosed by your doctor.
If thyroid hormone levels are found to be low, replacement with T4 is the most prescribed, as the body converts T4 into T3.
However, some people do not do well on T4 alone, and require a combination treatment of T4 and T3. There are various thyroid hormone replacement drugs on the market, and what works best for on person may not work good for the other. We are all different.
Again, bringing up T3 levels to optimal is good if a person is found to have low T3. Conversly, too much T3 can cause low cholesterol and hyperthyroidism.
Its all about balance.
