High Cholesterol Support Group
High cholesterol is the presence of high levels of cholesterol in the blood. It is not a disease but a metabolic derangement that can be secondary to many diseases and can contribute to many forms of disease, most notably cardiovascular disease. If you have high cholesterol, join the community to find support and share your experience.
If you are really interested in how our government decided on how we should all eat, then I have a couple books that I recommend that you read. These books were not written by doctors, or anyone connected to the medical field, but by researchers. Each one digs very, very deep into how our "recommended" diet evolved to where the government says it should be, and even though the authors live on opposite sides of the country with no connection with each other, they reach the same basic conclusions. (Hint: We are way off base on our diet!)
I have read both, and recommend both, but "The Big Fat....." is the one I would recommend if you only have the time, or interest, in this subject. It covers much of the same material as "Death by Food Pyramid", but it is easier to read and understand. "Death by Food Pyramid" gets very detailed with many charts and tables, so it is a little more difficult to read, but still excellent.
If you want to know more than your doctor, a lot more, about your diet, take the time to read these books. You will be much better informed, very mad at the medical community, and our great government.

btw, my doctor called today because my potassium is too high and just went for bloodwork again. First thing out of his mouth::: "we have to talk about your high cholesterol". He's always harping on me not taking statins, so it's not going to be a fun/congenial office visit Monday. Am armed with the printout from the links you sent about the lipitor/shingles connection, lol!
I understand your problem with your doctor. I went to our GP doctor the other day during my wife's appointment. She had just had a blood test and her cholesterol numbers were "bad" by his reasoning anyway. I asked him some fairly sharp/impolite questions and it is obvious that he knows nothing about the current science, just the old a "statin" cures all theory. He flat out told us numerous lies and old, long debunked, junk. It was all I could do from slapping him. We would change doctors, but how to find one that knows anything? Plus, we have been with him for 10 years now. My quess that with me going on Obama Care in two months I will have to find a new doctor. I think I will look for the youngest one I can find. Maybe medical schools are no longer just teaching big drug company trash - - yea, like that is ever going to happen. Money still sells; not much money in teaching the truth.
I so relate to how your doctor is! I looked mine up online and saw a review that said he's so nice, until you cross him and challenge him. Exactly what I found out.
We're the same:: at 67, it's sort of late to change doctors. Hubby always says to pick the young ones because they're up-to-date on new drugs. This one is young, but only knows what he knows. I just wish he would stop telling me my cholesterol levels are so high. This last result is 512. And telling me I'm a walking time bomb isn't a good thing to tell a senior, we have enough to worry about
I hope Obamacare is all it's supposed to be... we'll soon find out!
