Ok, my new year started out with a nice lovely monster nestled in my left armpit. It has grown over the last three days now to the size of a large egg. I was wondering what do any of you do before going to get one of these monsters lanced? Is there anything you can do to make the pain of the numbing injections less? That is the worst part of it for me, the needles and numbing, cause it takes twice the amount of numbing meds to actually numb it...something about the infection somewhat neutralizing the numbing meds.

But the easiest route would be to ask for a heavy duty pain reliever before they lance it.

It hurt like hell. The dr did the best he could to numb it up as much as possible, and didn't pussy foot around(of course I wouldn't have wanted him to!) and got it over as fast as possible. BUT of course I would have to get the ONLY dr on CRUTCHES in the whole dang hospital. lol
It's sorta old hat for me, I had rolled up rag in hand and ready. I know this sounds nutz, but I stuff it in my mouth so I don't scare the hell outta the other patients and kids in the ER. I cried like a baby, it sucked, but it's over, and I lived..*small chuckle*
When you don't have insurance, things like putting you in twilight is NOT a charge most hospitals are willing to eat that charge on a non insured patient, just sad fact, unless it is a dire circumstance.it just usually don't happen.
BUT on the bright side, it was better than it going into cellulitis and getting worse or putting me in the hospital or it reaching my heart and causing an infection on my heart. And most of my really bad ones are in my left armpit, so I really worry when I see one come up there.

Overhs- I think you may be thinking of a nerve block machine thing, not real sure though.
respectful- I'm grateful that you have never had to have one lanced and I pray you never do, it is painful, and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. I wish mine would go away like that, some do, but the vast majority come stay awhile, disappear, and then come back several times before finally making a monster of themselves.
ajensen- MISSED U! Hope things are going ok for you and your sweet litt'len. I did the freeze spray once, but not all drs are willing to do it.
I would say I wish they would give me some dilaudid, but I absolutely hate the way that stuff makes me feel. I had to have it once when I was waiting to have my gallbladder out after a really bad attack, and it made me feel like I was wrapped in one of those old scratchy iky army blankets that had been warmed up. I HATED it!
mufaris- I don't understand either why they have to hurt us to help us either, never made sense to me at first, but sometimes there is no way around it, kinda like having to set someones leg in a splint in the wild..I guess. I think it really harks back to the no insurance thing.
But hopefully I will have THAT issued kicked for me and the hubby in 45 days (that's how long it takes to get medicaid approval here in NC).
