Not only that, but worrying about passing HS along to a child is a pretty needless worry.. meaning, there are far more relevant birth defects and problems that COULD occur before the birth of the child and HS never rears its ugly head until around the onset of puberty. So in my possibly illogical mind, I believe that I would rather enjoy 10-12 years with a perfectly healthy child and maintain a constant lookout for HS signs and symptoms rather than NOT having a child at all! I have 3 children.. 18 year old boy and 8 and 3 year old girls. The span in their age differences was because I had trouble carrying a baby to term and lost 5 babies and had 7 miscarriages in all the years of trying. I wouldn't take all the money in the world for my children.. nor would I pay a penny for any more! LOL! My plate is full! Anyway, my 18 year old son has had ONE cyst like spot appear on his face and it was treated with antibiotics and simply reabsorbed into his body, never coming to a head or getting any worse, and this was months ago, and nothing like it has happened before or since. Does he "hate" me for possibly passing this HS on to him? Suprisingly, even after seeing what HS has done to my mind, body and soul.. my son isn't afraid of having HS.. his mindset is "there are worse things to have, at least you live with HS." My son is funny, good looking and happy, he is very accomplished as a mixed martial arts fighter and doesn't regret a thing in his life so far. Now that all being said, would I rather have missed out on the last 18 years with him just to soothe my conscious about passing HS along? No. If perhaps he does ..or if any of my children.. develop HS then so be it, that is a fact we will tend to when the time comes, but for now we will live, laugh and love like there is no tomorrow. Take a chance and make your life richer than you ever imagined. The baby you have will be the very first instant true love of your life and you will never regret it... at least I don't!

I have two kids.My daughter who is turning 13 this month has Asperger's Syndrome and my son who is 9 has ADHD. I have bigger worries for them than whether HS is passed on to them or not, although I sincerly hope and pray they never have to face down this horrid disorder! I had my first "boil" on the inside of my rear when I was 6months preg. with my first child. I had no idea what was in store for me,but at least there was no recurrence right away,so I did have a small span of time between the first and the 2nd boil.
Both of my children being special needs has helped me to be more patient. Which helps me to deal with HS a little better. That said, it don't mean I don't occassionally bite my hubby's head off..lol..I would'nt trade my little jems for anything,and I couldn't imagine a day (with or without HS) without them in my life.My daughter worries a little about it being passed down,and due to her Asperger's she sometimes obbsesses a bit about it.I can't blame her for a bit of concern considering how the mainstream media touts beauty and flawlessness of the skin and such.At least I have the comfort of knowing what signs to look for and how to help her (or my son) get care quickly. I just keep hope that someday there will be something out there for us HS sufferers, just like I do keep up hope that maybe one day no one will have to worry about their children being born with Asperger's or ADHD.

i have actually thought about donating my eggs but thought about the HS and the possible denial because of it.

Hi! I am new on here! K9girlie- did you find out if you are pregnant? I am 5.5 months along with my first and I have suffered with HS for the past 16 years or so. I am 28 and it started right when I hit puberty. No one in my family has had it except for my Aunt who has had like 2 boils in her life so I don't quite think it's the same! I unfortunately have never gotten any treatment that has done anything so I just kind of do home remedies and live with it.

Ltenn, it IS the same .. you and your Aunt I mean. Some HS sufferers never leave stage 1 which is a cyst here and there and no more.. while others shift into overdrive and progress through the stages at lightening speed. Not all people manifest HS in the same way. You may even have periods of NO cysts or flares for days, weeks, months or years on end, no one knows why or how this happens or what causes it to go into remission to never occur again, or why some people have a few and others lots.. its just a weird disease! LOL!

I am not sure exactly what she had as she blamed it on using a hair removal cream. If it is the same then there is hope that my child might not be as affected by it as I have been! It's not going to make me stop having children. My Mom died of cancer and there is a chance that could be passed. I don't want to live with the what if's! :)

k9girlis.. sorry you are feeling blue right now. I completely understand your feeling of loss. I too had a positive turn negative, as well as several miscarriges along the way toward having a baby.. it took me 4 years of trying the first time to have my son, then another 10 years for my second, a girl.. a lot of heartache and pain in between. Anyway, what I am getting at is, relax! IT WILL HAPPEN!! You will be an awesome mother when it is time for you to have that baby, and that isn't something we can rush no matter how hard we wish it. I know you will sonn be elated with good news, just relax and go with the flow, stop even thinking about it and let it just suprise you! ;-)

I have two a boy and a girl and I did not know what it was till I was pregnant so I was too into it to do anything and I certainly did not know I could pass it along because no one in my family has it. I am one of 6 children and I am the only one I know of who has it there are also 13 grandchildren and 5 great gran children and Im still the only one thus far. I agree with other members who say just do it. Life is a gamble and if it's not HS there are plenty of other things that they could get...I have made sure my kids have stayed a healthy weight and eat the right kind of foods just in case it has anything to do with it they take a vitamin daily and we pray for the best. I know what you mean though I too often worry and feel very quality over the "what if" factor. I made a video on you tube about it if you are intersted in seeing it. All we can do is love and hope for the best. Pregnancy was fine for me and delivery was fine as well no complications and baby was healthy....but do what you feel is best and good luck too you and your husband.

Ive been wondering about HS being genetic. No one in my family has it. My dad had one boil years and years ago but thats it.hmmmm. Also my dermatologist told me it wasn't genetic was he full of crap??

Ok here is what I know.
HS being genetic has conflicting reports.. although I truly believe it to be genetic as there are documented cases where people in entire families have HS. Example: Father, Son and Grandfather ALL have HS while other sons or daughters mysteriously do not.
No one knows why HS manifests in some people in a family while not in others, but we definately have a genetic predisposition to developing HS acquired at conception. It has been reported time and time again.
I too am the ONLY person in my immediate family who has HS and we were ALL raised exactly the same until we left home after graduation. However whereas my brothers or my sister did NOT manifest HS, I drew the "lucky" card and did! So there are obviously documented cases where HS affects only ONE person in an entire family, leading to the belief that somehow WE caused our HS to develop.
I find this line of thinking absurd because as I stated before I was raised with 3 other sibling and 4 cousins and I am the ONLY one with HS!
I hawever DO have a 2nd cousin whom I NEVER had any contact with during my developing and growing years that has recently been diagnosed with HS as well. I had not so much as talked to her over the phone until her mother told my mother about her having "cysts". It was at this point that I suggested that she see a specialist that I had been diagnosed by because I suspected HS, and sure enoguh that is what she has.
So it seems incredibly ODD to me that she would develop HS as well IF there were NOT some genetic predispostion to HS.
While your Dermatologist isn't full of crap, he is, in my opinion at least, completly and utterly wrong in his assertion that HS is not genetic. I feel he might need to read up on some studies about the genetic link to HS before he tells you again that HS is not genetic, he might just change his mind.

I so know your fears about the genetic link. I have 4 kids one of which is a girl and they are more predisposed to get HS than boys are, but as we all know men do get it as well. My oldest is 12 and he has so many allergies. I am terrified that he or any of my children will get this, but especially him. I watch my kids very carefully and I check out any boo-boo , bump or what have you. I have no genetic link in my family, that I know of. I pray each and everyday that my kids will never have to suffer this. There is no proof that they ever will. I may be selfish but I love my children and I would have never denied myself them. DO NOT deny yourself the joys of motherhood. Granted it's not easy being a mother to children when you have HS, but it is so worth it when you hear their little voices say " I love you Mommy"

Even knowing everything I have gone through over the years, I would STILL be selfish enough to have children.. and I did in fact have my 3rd AFTER my diagnosis and knowing full well about the genetic link. Call me a selfish bitch .. ok, thats true!. But! I am ALSO the MOST loved Mommy on the planet..at least according to me!! LOL! I wouldn't take a CURE for HS in trade for any one of my children.. and you all know THAT is saying a LOT!! LOL! The unconditional blind love they give is like no other drug on this planet.. they are little miracle workers!
