Hidradenitis Suppurativa Support Group
Hidradenitis suppurativa (hi-drad-uh-NIE-tis sup-yoo-ruh-TIE-vuh) is rare, long-term skin condition that features small, painful lumps under the skin. The disease manifests as clusters of chronic abscesses or boils, sometimes as large as baseballs, that are extremely painful to the touch and may persist for years with occasional to frequent periods of inflammation,...
I have had HS for about 25 years, spiro has changed my life! I still sometimes get a few small bumbs a few days before my period, but they shrink away before they turn into anything big.
As for side-effects, there hasn't been that many. When I first started I thought that it made me a bit groggy, so I started taking it before bed and it has been fine. Since I have been taking it, my periods have been a little less regular (I used to be like clock work!) but I don't know how much of that is from the spiro and how much is from my IUD.
Speaking of the IUD, I don't know how independent your daughter is, but they suggest taking the spiro with some form of birth control. There is a small risk that if you get pregnant with a boy while taking it, his sex organs won't develop properly.
The spiro has been so great for me, I encourage all women to try it, or at least have their hormone levels tested.
All the best.
I have been on Spironolactone since July of last year and it has also changed my life! I suffered for 27 years and tried everything! Finally a new dermatologist suggested I try it. It took about 6 months and 3 increases of dosage but I would consider myself virtually cured! I do have to say though that the first few months on it were really quite bad. I was about to give up but the last increase in dosage seemed to do the trick.
You will have to have your potassium levels in your blood checked every 3 months or so and you do have to watch how much potassium you take in.
The working dosage for me is 150 mg once a day.
Hope this helps!
