Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease which can cause liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person's blood. Many people with HCV infection have no symptoms and are unaware of the need to seek treatment. Hepatitis C infects an estimated 150-200 million people worldwide.
My husband was just diagnose with hep c. We still have to get more bloodwork to see which one. His utrasound cane back fine but because his platelets was at 103 low they want a biopsy . She thinks it's cirrhosis. Does anyone have experience with this? My husband thinks he is on a death bed. Please any info would really helps u's

I dont know anything about platelet counts but I can tell you that I had hep c for about twenty years before I found out about it. When they did a biopsy on me the said I had cirrhosis. Many who have had hep have some form of liver damage. Hep c is a very slow moving virus so it takes many years to do damage for most. When I was treated there was only a 50% chance of cure but there are new drugs they just came out with that increase the odds of cure and the treatment is shorter. I think the geno type dictates the treatment. I had geno type 1 and that was the hardest to treat with the older meds. Do you have any idea how long he had hep c?

Most docs recommend a biopsy when someone is diagnose with hep . My sono showed borderline enlarged liver. I wish I new more about the platelets. 20 years shoud not have damaged his liver too bad. Please let us know how thing work out. When is he going to get the biopsy?

Please keep us informed. I wish him the best of luck. Platelets have to do with clotting. Mosrite probably knows more. I have heard of people on this forum where everything would lead to cirrhosis--blood work etc and that was not the case. Keep the faith and re-assure him that nothing is inclusive. Keep researching and stay informed. There is a reason why HCV is called the 'dragon.' Tell him about us, I plan on slaying the dragon.

My platelets were low prior to treatment as well as my lymphocytes. From what i have read and the hepatologist explained that when the liver starts to have damage the spleen gets involved and hence the low platelets and lymphocytes. A great book they gave me was Living with Hep C. Very good for general info.

Well actually lower but not as low as your husbands. I was surprised when they did my screening before tx and my platelet count was below normal. The only reason I knew about the spleen/liver connection was from the book my doc gave me. My stage of liver damage was Stage 2 Grade 2 a few years ago when I had my biopsy. I found out 11 years ago I had Hep C so I avoided a lot of meds that I knew were hard on the liver. I am sure your husband is freaking out. You will know more when you get the biopsy. But even with cirrhosis treatment can prevent further damage. I am looking for my book so I can give you the author. REALLY good info.
