Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease which can cause liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person's blood. Many people with HCV infection have no symptoms and are unaware of the need to seek treatment. Hepatitis C infects an estimated 150-200 million people worldwide.

How are they conducted in the USA?
Within a few months all of the breast cancer sites and hotlines were exploding with complaints about this drug. Bone pain wasn't even listed as a common side effect, yet almost every woman who took It had the same problem. I don't know anyone who was able to take the drug for the recommended period of time.
I also found out later that it causes liver damage. I was supposed to stay on is drug for the rest of my life. I stayed on it for two years and decided that quality of life was more important than quantity of life. Against doctor's advise I went off of the drug and I am still alive. The drug company's side effects were substantially understated. And I still become livid when I see that doctor at Race for the Cure.

By the time they get to phase 1 they are past laboratory and animal testing and the nest step is human testing.
Not everyone should enter a trial if they can wait and have the financial means to afford for them to market.
Phase I: Researchers test a new drug or treatment in a small group of people for the first time to evaluate its safety, determine a safe dosage range, and identify side effects.
Phase II: The drug or treatment is given to a larger group of people to see if it is effective and to further evaluate its safety.
Phase III: The drug or treatment is given to large groups of people to confirm its effectiveness, monitor side effects, compare it to commonly used treatments, and collect information that will allow the drug or treatment to be used safely.
Phase IV: Studies are done after the drug or treatment has been marketed to gather information on the drug's effect in various populations and any side effects associated with long-term use.

BTW- there are lawsuits in the works against BMS in the trial where someone died and several were hospitalized for heart failure. It turns out that BMS knew about toxicity issues. I can't be bothered to google it now...
