One new drug was FDA approved: Gilead's Sovaldi (sofosbuvir). Read all the posts here with Gilead in the title. You can search these discussion on top. It's non-interferon and prescribed - I THINK - with or without Riba depending on Genotype.

BUT, it's cost prohibitive ($1,000 a pill/$84,00 for 12 days) and one of the major US drug ins cos is not going to pay for it...so most of here are WAITING.

Medvir's semeprivir/olysio is also approved for Gen 1, but doesn't seem to have as good a cure rate. Hi, Im in 8 wk clinical trial with sofu & riba, so far so good ,about half way thru VL dropped into the 100's next visit should be undect. The hospital I'm at did say that even when sofu is approved which it is now that geno 1 would still have to do interferon. Try getting into trial, good luck.

Correction...$84.000 for a 12 weeks course and as you can tell you even get a discount for $6k. What a deal. Don't miss out on it.

Thanks for the info, I really want to avoid the interferon, I kept hearing about the new interferon free all pill 8-12 week treatments and was really excited, but alas , if it sounds too good....
I suppose I could get through 8 weeks but I have low tolerance for medicines.

AbbVie will have their 4 pill cocktails out this summer. No interferon and really getting stellar results for geno 1

Kramer I PRAY you are right about Abbvie. Thing is, I know people who did the Turquoise trial tx (geno 1 cirrhotics - and every one I know did FANTASTIC) and are still going for draws through JULY. So it would be after that that Abbvie compiles the data and sends their tx off to the FDA - but maybe they'll SUPER fast track it. Abbvie certainly sees a big opening now with ExpScripts' latest maneuver re. Sovaldi.

Cat, there are 2 FDA tracks: regular submissions take approximately 1 year and "fast track" submissions take approximately 6 months. There ain't no faster!

Anyway, Sofosbuvir + Riba is approved for genotype 2 & 3. Genotypes 1 & 4 still need interferon.

However, the FDA approved sofosbuvir in combination with pegylated interferon alfa-2a (Pegasys or PegIntron) and ribavirin for 12 weeks for people with HCV genotypes 1 or 4. *****But it also said that sofosbuvir plus ribavirin for 24 weeks may be considered for genotype 1 patients who are ineligible for or unable to tolerate interferon.*****
