Guessing. Years of slightly elevated ast/alt & +hcv, lifestyle history, & results of liver bx. The amount of damage may depend on the lifestyle since initial infection.

I don't think it's possible for doctors to have a clue.

I know I was infected 2010 because I engaged in unbelievably stupid behavior that I NEVER do then and several months before that I tested negative.

For me since 17 yo. Idiopathic elevated enzymes until in my mid 20s they started referring to is as non A non B then Dx as HCV in 1993.
Gosh I've had this thing my whole life it seems!

Oh I think I must have got it from a toilet seat at a Deep Purple concert but I was too stoned to remember ...lol

I saw Deep Purlple in a small converted theater with the best acoustics! don't ask me what year perhaps I was stoned on a toilet seat with ImK

I know that I was infected by a blood transfusion back in 1986 and found out that I had it when I applied for Job in New York for Con Edison...

Prior to the transfusion, I always tested negative and I never slammed any dope via shared needle...

However, I did snort a whole bunch of Cocaine but, just about every time I used a brand new straw and never accepted anyone else because I feared I would catch a cold, so who knows for sure!

I just know that I was very careful in many ways when I used, so I doubt it that I got infected via that route.

When I was initially diagnosed, they still called it Non A - Non B Hepatitis which later turned out be HCV.

Blood transfusion in 1969 followed by jaundice, elevated LFT, totally fatigued and a diagnosis of nonA-nonB hep because they hadnt yet isolated hcv yet ( the late 80s i think). My infection date is a no brainer

my infection date was between 1964 and 1969 - slammin' too much of everything - had a little love relationship going with the steel. Got really quite ill in '69 - too ill to move to a hospital - thats back when doctors were doctors and did house calls. Diagnosed non A non B. Diagnosed HCV when the new assays were developed 1990-1992 - thats my guess

Only reason i know is because i turned yellow/threw up my wine (which i enjoyed most nights with dinner) and ended up hospitalized so...it was close to X'mas.

Still..despite feeling so so depressed about it - it did save me from a downwward spiral into heroin addiction. My partner shot me up every night for 3 months until that 1 time he used his needle on me.
I got so scared from going acute that going back was never an option.

Actually I don't think anyone can say for sure, any more than you can say where you caught a cold. You might think you know the most likely source, but one can never be 100% sure.

Some doctors think HCV has been around thousands of years, long before IV drug use and blood transfusions. This supposedly accounts for the different genotypes that are geographically clustered. If that is true, there must be transmission methods that kept it alive.
