Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease which can cause liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person's blood. Many people with HCV infection have no symptoms and are unaware of the need to seek treatment. Hepatitis C infects an estimated 150-200 million people worldwide.

I've gotten lots of good info here, but the prejudice and hate are stressing me. That is the opposite of what I need. It's not that one or two sick people post hateful things; I'd expect that. It's how many people defend this as "humor" that disgusts me and makes me sure I don't fit here. I need a support group where people are tolerant and try to help each other. So far the Alternative subgroup has managed to be that, even though it seems a lot of us are religious. We are able to have different faiths and still respect each other. BTW, not that it should matter, but I'm monogomous, married, and straight. I say that because we need to stand up against hatred even if it's not directed specificly at us. Bigotry hurts all of us. I'm so disappointed that the whole group didn't respond that ridiculing gays isn't funny or acceptable. Two threads on this after the one bashing other religions (after Louie asked for tolerance) is more than I want to subject myself to. Do you really want to give the impression that Christians are hate filled fools?

Thats a great post Brigid, I feel the same way. It's gotten way out of hand in the last week. It saddens me that you feel you must leave, but do what you gotta do. I suggest keeping your account open and maybe check back in a while. I'm really hoping this will blow over soon.

You can't change things if you leave. More importantly, you can't support people that need you here. Eventually these things work themselves out because of the folks that are still here on.the board. Some folks do take a break for a while though.

Great post Brigit - this site ebbs and flows with fundamentalism from time to time - I too have considered pulling the pin due to self righteous bigotry but I try to remember the purpose which binds us together - HCV

I think every HCV site has its regulars that piss people off or that are annoying. Other sites have moderators though that don't let things get crazy like DS does. Try Hepatitis Central for alot of info...it's moderated, too. There are less and less posts on here anymore...very sad.

I hope you reconsider Brigid but I understand if you need to go.

I have learned who those are that I need to avoid (to limit stress) and it's pretty easy to do so...once you know who they are. Maybe you could consider trying to weed out the crap and take in the good Hep C information that you can get from here. It might be worth a shot.

Oh, and please don't be disappointed that everyone didn't stand up against the thread that is the point of your post because many find it best to not keep adding life to such ugly topics. In fact, it's been stressed by DS to take that approach...for the most part.

Yes it's best not to comment I think but that can be hard sometimes, especially if someone really pisses you off. Unfortunatly that's how good members get banned.

Brigid so sorry you feel you want to leave. This site is 50% excellent, 40% good and 10% not nice people. We all try to be tolerant and contribute in an inclusive way but sometimes the 10% toxic content can spoil the overwhelmingly good stuff.
This room is not by "invite only" so of course anyone can wander in and post any old garbage. That is not the norm here though.

I'm new here Brigid, and I have already learned that I should take the good stuff and disregard the rest. Sometimes I feel like just throwing my arms up and saying WTF. I'm here. I'm staying. I'm learning through other's experience so that I am as educated as I can be when I do start my treatment. Brigid, if it hadn't been for this group, I would not have learned about clinical trials and I would not get the treatment I need. I'm also learning to bite my tongue. Man, is that hard. Oh well, such is life.

This site is like the real world. People won't always agree and people won't always act nice. But most of the time it is a great place. I have said some things that I was not proud of later, but people forgave me and we all moved on.
Being in treatment makes some of us cranky, sensitive and irritable. At least it did me. Sometimes topics pop up that cause disagreement, but when it comes down to it people are always here to support each other in their fight against HCV.
If one person finds out about a clinical trial because of this site, then something good has been accomplished.

bagolady, I was referring to those of us on TX right now...I get a little more agitated from the meds and find it harder to bite my tongue. I admire those that can.
