My doctor just called and said my thyroid isn't functioning correctly, my TSH is 46.60....I am no longer on HCV treatment, it failed, the only other meds I take now are premarin (had radical hysterectomy years ago) and clonazepam for sleep and panic attacks). Is it common to develop a thyroid problem from HCV treatment, and does anyone have info regarding the drug Levoxyl, any bad sides from it, etc. Thanks so much.

Yes, it is common to develop thyroid problems on tx. I had Grave's Disease as a teenager and had mine removed. Have been on replacement therapy ever since with NO problems. It is no big deal....and the medication is fairly cheap, too!

TSuzy, you're right, it's very cheap, I just got the prescription, it is levothyroxine, $5.00 with my insurance, so that's the good news. Noni, yes this med is for thryroid underactivity, mine isn't producing anything/hormones of some sort, so the pituitary gland overworks sending signals to the thyroid to produce and the result is a high TSH count. Whew! My hair has been falling out like crazy lately, hubby even noticed it in the shower, and my skin is worse than when I was on TX, plus depression and irritability (think?) ... so hopefully, this med will level those things out. Thanks for the info and support ladies, I really appreciate it so much. xo

My thyroid crashed on TX as well. I am now going to an accupunture and taking herbs to try to bring it back. It's not uncommon for it to comeback it does happen. Start taking seledium, iron, zinc and iodine in vitamins to help it from getting worse. Good luck with everything

Me and Miss Joan are like 2 peas in a pod! My Thyhroids are all fucked up. Had to get radiated and all that! And I still take meds every day for it. Now my TSH levels are up again and I have been off treatment since last July 07

Removal of thyroid gland necessitates the taking of synthetic hormones for the rest of one's life. I had mine removed when ZI was about 30! I thought bec. we are on the map as iodine deficient area (UN - WHO) - the surgeon told me he thought I had cancer, but had single layer pathology: no sign of it. A simple biopsy would have solved this one. Unnecessary op.! Ws put on thyriod replacement when the problems was solved in Quebec - I was SO BLOODY COLD!m- ffit's & up and down ride.- doses get altered every 6 mths. My elder d. who takes lithium for bipolar, had to stop - her thryrod was so swollen that her neck disappeared - so for those with both HepC and on Lithium: Watch this please, it can be the last thing they think of! My doc did say that it could correct itself after taking the meds for a while and that it was not for sure I'd be on it "forever"....this is starting to feel like a crap shoot, who knows what the tx has done and what's next....oh well, 'tis what it 'tis. xo

Well would'nt you know I'd be different I have found that alot with the doctors everyone of them from endocrine doc,GI doc, 2-liver doc, rheumy doc all look at me and say you are an unusual case well by now I realize that no wonder my mom only had one of me!! LOL My thyroid was over active they said like a 400 horse power motor running well they radiated it like Tattman and now I take Levoyxl daily can't go without it . You know they never mention the thyroid much but it does control your hormones, metabolizes different things etc, even though they can operate and remove it you still have to have a replacement to do the job it no longer does, I too have Graves diease but it is controled by removing the thyroid and placing me on the Levoxyl,Good Luck folks!!

I should add they had to radiate mine for platelets too low for any type of surgery, Makes me wonder if I had the transplant how they gonna keep me from bleeding out and that is the biggest reason they loose a person during that operation... And when I was on tx and had to have the transfusions it took them over 24hrs to get the units each time cause of the antibodies my body has developed told me if I was to get in car wreck and ned blood I'd die before they could get it to me ....I thank God for him cause he is the one that has seen me threw all of this seems like another road block each time i turn around but He is right there beside me to help me step over it!!!!

My gastro doc called today, he said that now that I have this thyroid issue, I probably can't ever do tx again? I find this odd given the responses here, has anyone else been told no tx if thyroid isn't working properly? Thanks...

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
