Hepatitis C Support Group
Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease which can cause liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person's blood. Many people with HCV infection have no symptoms and are unaware of the need to seek treatment. Hepatitis C infects an estimated 150-200 million people worldwide.
Taking more selenium is a strategy to slow the progress of the virus.

Remember to watch the shellfish!
Also, don't forget to discuss this with your transplant coordinator and/or, your transplant Doctor and, even a transplant dietician, or a dietician very familiar with transplant patients because it doesn't hurt to ask and they may have a reason that you or I or anyone else may not be aware of...
I mean, they don't really need to know how many pieces of toilet paper you need to wipe your ass with but, they do like to know what you're putting in your body as a nutrient so let them know.
P.S. I did have a liver transplant too! Some 15 yrs ago and counting!

Things are quite different with the post transplant segment of the total HCV population and as one myself, I have to rely on what my primary care, transplant & hepatology doctors recommend because we can have many complications just from being post transplant, let alone going through treatment as well... So ask them first Billy.
And thank you for your very kind message Trissa. ;>)

The most important factor that we cannot nonchalantly tinker with is our immune system because it is currently being INTENTIONALLY suppressed!!!
So, I don't recommend that you take selenium Billy unless you do get approval and are given the appropriate dose from your doctors first!!!
This is the main reason I am overemphasizing for you and anyone else who is post transplant and on immuno-suppressive drugs to get in touch with your doctors first!!!!
Remember that we as post transplant patients must consider that what's good for most people doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to be good for us also because it may just be the cause of the opposite which is BAD! Consult with your doctors first!
Look! I have so far made it to 15+ years post transplant mainly because I am very, very careful what I put into my body and if the Lord wants me to continue to live for many more years, then I must follow his will and be vigilant with respect to what I put into my very being and if it's worked for me all these years, then it will work for you and everyone else who has received "The gift of Life!"
Finally, Jesus sometimes communicates to you through other folks also so, Hint, Hint!!!
Que Dios te bendigas siempre Guillermo which translates:
May God bless you always William.

Henry
"About Selenium
A trace mineral considered to be essential for good health, selenium is typically required only in small amounts. Selenium is incorporated into proteins to make selenoproteins, important antioxidant enzymes. Selenoproteins help prevent cellular damage from free radicals, a major threat to the liver in those with Hepatitis C. In addition, selenium is needed for proper:
immune system function
thyroid function"
The last thing we want as post transplant patients is to boost our immune system because of the very real possibility of organ rejection setting in as a result! Enough Said!!!
Respectfully,
Henry
