Oh, cool, it's a Phase 3 trial! That means that safety issues have already been studied in Phases 1 and 2. This is the best trial phase to get into if you can.

oops, sorry to be dribbling here - this is NOT for Geno 3's! (boo) Don't know why, but you have to be Geno 1,2,4,5 or 6. So it's not quite ALL genotypes - I just realized that "pan" must mean "multi."

I am loosing concentration...how do I know if I have cirohsis...I think I have asked my Dr...the last one just brushed me off..(I fired him)...is it in the lab work...Biopsy right...when it shows the stage you are in...stage 4 is chirohsis sp?

Yes stage 4 is usually cirrhois. That being said it can be early cirrhosis which means even with HCV your liver can compensate for many years. Once you clear the virus even a cirrhotic liver can regenerate.

Marilyn, that's a good question because there's no simple answer. Milk Thistle supplements are not created equal - there are different amounts of sylimarin marianum depending on the product. So you can pay less and take more or pay more and take less.

First thing though, DO get on it! I truly believe it is a powerful anti-toxin protector for the liver. I started taking it when I was dx'ed with HCV in 2002 - and for all I know, it kept me alive - or at least from decompensating. Of course, was told to stop taking it during tx. This is just my opinion, but I think the majority of heppers feel this way - that MT is GREAT STUFF.

Now that I am done with tx and HCV12 (YAY), I am right back into taking about 2-3 MT caps a day - mine are 1g caps but looks like the actual silymarin in there is 250. There is also fillers. This is not the greatest brand of MT - I need to go back to the good (more expensive stuff) that I took before tx. An herbalist friend of mine had the tea leaves - she's the one who told me you can't over-do on it - your body will take what it needs and excrete the rest. Is she right? I don't know, but I take whatever the bottle says - even now, when I'm CURED - :0)

I'd suggest that you go to a health food/natural supplement store and have a chat with someone there. Those folks usually know their stuff, but you've got to let your intuition speak to you too. None of my docs would ever talk about it since it's not regulated - you know how that goes.

I am so sorry about this new stuff not being for Geno 3's. HOWEVER, that's just Gilead's drugs. Other pharma's want you 3's BAD - esp. knowing Gilead is not covering you at this point in time or the hear future. Hopefully you doctor is wise to what's happening with the pharmas for you 3's - who are now like we 1's used to be - hard to treat. I am SURE though that other pharmas are on the bandwagon for 3's.

TH- your labs can give good clues about cirrhosis - albumin, bilirubin, platelet count - some other things - but if you are gonna see my doc in PHX he will set you up for a FibroScan - no more biopsies, girl. Lab work does not say "cirrhosis" or anything - but the values tell a story - your doctor knows what the values mean. An ultrasound can give hints - the texture of the liver, for example. Biopsies, yes, that's where you will see a stage on the report. BUT for me those were not reliable. Two of them done 10 months apart in 2012 and 2013 and one came out Stage 3+ and the other Stage 1!!! What does that say? It says the liver is a HUGE organ - one piece here is pretty healthy - another piece way over there, no so much. I had four docs in the past four years tell me I had cirrhosis and one adamant that I did not. We'll find out soon. Some people get really sick when they are cirrhotic - or they have ascites, or esophageal varices caused by portal hypertension (you can google those). Others feel fine - until it progresses more.

lol - you asked a simple question, but there is no simple answer. A sharp doc. can tell you just from looking at labs and feeling your liver! Yep.

The FibroScan that Dr. M finally got at that hospital is brand new - I think I'm one of the first ones to be doing it (Sep. 10). Hope you are gonna be there soon - if all works out that you can see my awesome doc.

I am genotype 3a and my liver biopsy from Dec 2011 indicated Stage 2, Grade 3. I started 12 week treatment with sofosbuvir & GS-5816 (no interferon or ribavirin) on May 22nd, in a Phase 2 trial. My starting levels were VL: 6,500,000, AST 47, ALT 58.
After 1 week treatment: VL: 567, AST 25, ALT 26
After 2 week treatment: VL: 42, AST, 22, ALT 17
