Hepatitis C Support Group
Hepatitis C is a blood-borne viral disease which can cause liver inflammation, fibrosis, cirrhosis and liver cancer. The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is spread by blood-to-blood contact with an infected person's blood. Many people with HCV infection have no symptoms and are unaware of the need to seek treatment. Hepatitis C infects an estimated 150-200 million people worldwide.
the hep c virus feeds and replicates with iron so this is why it hangs out in the liver. you really don't want to give the virus food to replicate!
if it were me, i would definitely NOT take any iron pills! in treatment if you get anemic they'll prescribe procrit injections.
what kind of doctor do you have? i'm surprised he told you to take extra iron. (unless there's new research that has come out in the last couple of months? but i doubt it.)
My Family Dr. is very good but he told me to take Advil for pain..I told him ..no ..my liver Dr. said NO to advil, Asa, NSAIDS ..bad for liver.
Iron feeds the virus.
It's not possible for every Dr. to know everything bout everything.
Good on you for asking! Keep asking questions.
You are your own best advocate.

But I have a question that hope can get answered on your thread.
I'm 6 months post tx, I relapsed............ should or shouldnt I take iron, after relapsing? I'm desperate for energy, will it hurt me?
NONE of my Docs ever said that......I will try to think of it, that they overlooked that valuable fact and not that they like throwing me under the bus
