Welcome, Daniel. I'm glad your mother has decided to get tx. She's lucky to have you to take care of her. I take care of my mother too--she doesn't have hep, she's just elderly, almost 86 years. You will find much support and kindness here. But most importantly, I hope you have found a good liver specialist for your mother. Listen to what the doc says first and foremost. Best wishes for your mother's good health.

side effects are different for everone, some have side effects and some dont .There are a lot of die effects but doesnt mean she will get them all. Usually 6 to 8 hours after the shot she may feel flu like symptoms, achy, musles, chills, fever, eyes ache. Most of these subside after about 4 months. I had 4 days feeling like the flu and the rest of the week I felt great , and then shot day would come around. The main thing is to drink half your body weight in water. I couldnt drink water in the beginning so I added juice to my water. The worse you feel the more water you need to drink and you will feel better.The worse for me was my hair thinning , you dont loose it all but for a while you loose alot and that subsides after a while also.Anger and itching is also a side effect, but tell the doctor and he will give pills to calf nerves. Actually that is when I felt much better after he gave me nerve pills. We will be here to help all we can, she can do this.1a or 1b is 48 weeks treatment and 2 or three is 24 weeks treatment,barb

Welcome Daniel =) This site was a God send for me and i'm sure it will be the same for you and your mother. I am about 3 months post treatment and so far so good !! The Doc says that I am cleared of Hep C. Thank God, daily strength, and medicine!!!
I'm not gonna say treatment was easy but I am happy I decided to go through with it.

Welcome Daniel! What a wonderful son you are take care of your Mother! You need to know what genotype she has. She will most likely find this out from blood tests, then a biopsy to see where she stands. The sides are different for everyone, but most are very alike. You have come to the right place. There are many people on this site with valuable information. We will all be right here to help both of you throughout her journey. Please keep us posted. Ask away. We are all in the same boat. I am Mckenzie, both my husband and I had hep c, genotype 1a, which was the hardest to get rid of, but we decided to go through the motions, biopsy, blood test, eventually did each a round of 48 weeks of interferon chemo treatment.

Today we are still living free of the virus known as Hepatitis c.

I would love for you to let me know what you know so far on your mother's situation.

For example:
Which genotype is she?
Has she had a biopsy yet?
The biopsy reveals the damage.
What grade and stage is her cirrohsis?
Was she told that she could do treatment at this time, with her cirrohsis?

So when you feel up to it, I am just a message away.

Hello McKenzie! Wow - so many nice comments! You guys are very good at making newbies feel welcomed!

To answer your questions (the best I can)...
I am not sure of her genotype.
She has had a biopsy which shows she does have damage.
She says its stage 2 but I am not too sure.
Her doctors have recommended Interferon so I assume it's safe for her to start treatment even with her condition.

Are there other forms of treatment available that we should know about?

And milk thistle. Is that safe to take prior to getting on Interferon?

Also -- what does "tx" mean?

Hi Daniel, I had to look to see if you were not my son! Your doing what my son is doing for me. I felt related to all the comments! It felt good to read them,I know how lucky your mom is, (Iam her) I have genotype 1a, Im not on treatment yet,my son is in the Navy and hes trying to put me on as a dependant so i can get started,if not I'll find another way. My son is curious about DS,always wanting to know what Im doing on the site and asking questions about it. God Bless you and your mom, Daniel.
