Its just my opinion but I think the medical field needs to be more educated in order for it to be diagnosed sooner to save millions in medical costs ,the sooner its caught the less medical issues an individual is faced with thus cutting costs for everyone ,plus educating the patient to pass to thier families .

I agree with you. I had never heard of HH until I was diagnosed. Can you imagine how many other people are living with HH and all the symptoms and complications it causes and have no idea what they have. I personally feel testing the Ferritin level should be part of lab work at least yearly.

There is a political history in the US that is the main reason iron is not regularly tested. I have heard that early on in Medicare, many providers gave regular iron profiles and then prescribed B-12 shots and charged high prices for both. Medicare thought they were unnecessary and banned them...and all other US insurances followed suit. My endocrinologist told me that he cannot order an iron profile (I guess they do not do just ferritin levels) without a fairly certain diagnosis. Ironically, since few doctors believe HH is common, few check for it, few people are found to have it and it continues to be thought of as rare...I think it is not rare it is just hidden. So we need to keep working...J.
