I have not had a bypass , but my ex-boss , now retired, had one in 1986 .He was 45 years old , smoked and had a lot of stress.. He's over 70 now and has not had any further problems. It is possible to live a long and healthy life afterwards.
Absolutely must stop smoking and exercise once the docs give him clearance. Cardiac rehab would be a good idea . I wish your brother

Bypass surgery is one of the most common medical procedures in the world today, and highly successful. I had multiple heart attacks, a quadruple (4X) bypass, valve replaced and an ICD implanted 6 + years ago and still around annoying people.

If he only had the procedure four days ago, then it's no surprise he's still experiencing pain. It takes time to heal, this is a very invasive procedure.

Heart disease is a long journey. That's not necessarily bad, just that it's something he'll have to be aware of the rest of his life. His recovery will be dependent on many factors but the absolutely most important one is his attitude.

If he chooses to change his lifestyle and follow his doctors treatment plan, there is life after a cardiac episode. Stop smoking, exercise and watch his diet, and above all follow the doctor's treatment plan, meaning take his medications.

One final thing, you are obviously a loving and concerned sister, and I commend you for that. Now just don't treat him like a piece of fragile china to be placed on a shelf and protected from life. Let him do stuff on his own. I promise he won't break and he'll be much better suited to lifes challenges.

One question I wanted to ask..I noticed today when he tslks his voice is very shallow. .almost like talking in a whisper..also short ness of breath...is that nomal?

Almost assuredly he had a tracheal tube in his throat to promote breathing during the procedure. It really does a number on the vocal cords short term. When I had my Trach tube removedat first I could barely get out sounds as it flat out hurt, then I sounded like mickey mouse for weeks before my normal booming baritone (it's my story and I'm sticking to it) returned.
