I guess it depends on the situation and the setting. In a professional atmosphere I would say a handshake. In my personal life I would say I prefer a hug.

Definitely a hanshake if I'm meeting them for the very first time! A hug is waaaay too intimate! If I don't know who you are, my hand is all you're going to be touching.

Handshake. If a male, a firm palm handshake. If a female, more of a gentle "fingers" handshake. That seems to be the classy thing to do.

Professionally speaking, I always give a firm hand shake and I even give them to women. I hate a limp hand shake, it makes me think your lazy and useless. I personally feel a limp hand shake comes across as you're a weak person :( Not good in my eyes.

I always hug both my male and females friends when meeting and leaving that I know, I have always been like that. Now don't get me wrong, I don't hug strangers, but if I met you for the first time I'd shake your hand meeting you and if I liked your company male or female I'd probably give you a hug as we were departing.

I agree with Mercedes. I hate a limp "finger" handshake from men or women. When men give me that kind of handshake in business it suggests to me that they think I am not on the same level as them and that I am some kind of shrinking violet which is not me at all.

I prefer a handshake in business and sometimes in social settings, but in social settings a "hello, nice to meet you" is more to my liking. A hug is too personal when I first meet someone.
