Healthy Sex Support Group
This community is dedicated to an open discussion about healthy sex and sharing thoughts and feelings about sexuality and improving one's sex life. Most active adults desire to have an active and fulfilling sex life, both for themselves and also their partner. Here we discuss common sexual challenges faced by both men and women.
He always pulls out... he's the one that's terrified of me getting pregnent! He's on edge this month because he didn't pull out once. It's really kind of amusing to me.
I don't completely trust the oral "pill" or other methods, and, even though condoms aren't 100%, properly lubed up, they shouldn't break.
The Depo Shot is administered every three months by your doctor (or you can get them at Planned Parenthood I believe). There is weight gain associated with the shot, and as the months go on there is a slight increase in the risk of accidental pregnancy because the estrogen levels drop off considerably.
The patch is a relatively new thing, it stays on for a week at a time and administers the doses of hormones dermally. This is a nice option for younger girls because you don't have to really bother with it, and it also works with you're taking antibiotics, which the pill doesn't. I do believe you need a script for this.
The Nuva Ring (spelling?) is newer too. Its a thin flexible ring that you insert into the vagina with an applicator and it stays around your cervix. I've heard nothing but good things about this contraceptive, the only negative being that rings need to be refrigerated until you're ready to use them, and that they sometimes come out during sex.
Longer-term options include insertions that your doctor can put in during an office visit, but these are mostly meant for women in long-term relationships that don't want to have kids for awhile, if I remember correctly.
Personally, I stick with the pill because I've been on it for 4 years and it's always worked just fine for me. However, if you don't have the discipline to take the pill, you should look into the ring or the patch. Just remember that none of these options, besides a condom, can help protect against STDs. Also, different types of contraceptives vary in their level of hormone administration, and can be used to treat varying medical conditions. The pill that I am on (Yasmin) helps control menstrual cramping.
If you choose to go with the pill, do a lot of research before you go to your doctor. Many of today's pills have extremely low doses of estrogen and progesterone, and you may feel that you require something of a higher dose. Many of the women here have told you to talk to your doctor...unfortunately, many doctors are very poorly informed about the different options out there (even though thats their job), and they are often swayed by the pharmaceutical companies that provide them with samples and stuff.
It is so very important that we women take responsibility for our OWN reproductive health, which includes being as informed as we can be BEFORE we talk to the doctor.
The decision to start a contraceptive is not to be taken lightly, and you may need to try several before you find one that suits your lifestyle. Again, it is a part of taking responsibility for your own reproductive health. Good luck!
Can you tell I like it...?
that's an extreme....tried to get it done after I had my dtr...but they said I was too young....10 yrs later...I had my son...and got it done....
no regrets....love being able to play...and not worry about getting pregnant
like I said....this is age related....and hoepfully...AFTER you have had kids...
I was on the pill for 25 yrs before that...
My daughter is 16 and she has a Merina IUD for birth control. It is effective for 5 years. She can have it taken out anytime she is ready to conceive or have another one placed in five years to be protected still. It is effective once it's implanted. Since she's only 16 she uses a condom every time she has sex for all the extra protection they provide. To protect yourself from diseases you should use a condom with any type of birth control unless you are monogamous and are certain your partner is too.
Here's to love!!
