make sure your not allergic to the copper first or any metal for that matter. When i went in to get my tubes tied the doctor had said she was going to put one in on me she asked if i was allergic to anything metal i told her well i'm allergic to genaric metal she looked at me like i didn't know what i was talking about i told her my ears get infected with a cheap metal needless to say she opted for the other solution

I had a copper IUD in place for a while, it was called 'Gynefix' (basically copper beads on a nylon wire.)

Very painful to have fitted, but then again I've never had kids so that would make a difference.
I ended up having to get it removed because of problems. I'd get these sudden severe abdominal pains, needed to see an emergency doctor twice for tests but they couldn't find anything obvious wrong; but no more problems since it's been removed. Again, if you've already had kids you might find it much easier.

I had an IUD and got a really bad infection from it and my sister just had to have one removed because of infection so my experiences with them are not good.

I had one years ago, cant say i'd recommend it, made my periods heavy.

Have you ever heard of Mirena. I think that is what it is called. Anyway, it is an IUD but made of a plastic material. I tried it for 6 months. I spotted the whole time and had it removed. But I have a friend who it works great for.
So I guess it just depends on the person.

I work for a large OB/GYN practice and one of my jobs used to be to schedule the IUD's for our patients. Like Sassy said I would recommend you see if they can get the Mirena instead of the Paraguard. We insert both but very few of the cooper Paraguards due to so many problems with them. The Mirena being made out of plastic has fewer side effects and problems. Like any kind of birth control not everyone is going to have a good experience or be suited for it. I recommended it to my sister and she had a bad experience having it inserted. I credit this to two problems, it was inserted by her PCP and not her GYN and they did have a medicine available to use when they experienced trouble with the insertion which is a nerve block and would have made it pain free. I am sorry but for the life of me I can't at the time remember the name but I would be happy to look it up at work on Monday and pm it to you if you want. As far as your other question in your other post about having it inserted by a GYN or a ARNP, well we also have a ARNP in our practice and she inserts plenty of IUD's without problems. I think the biggest difference when it comes down to them at all is that a ARNP will spend more time with you as her schedule is usually more flexible while the GYN is so booked up you don't get a lot of quality time. Hi. I have the copper IUD in. I opted for it because I'm not ready to have anymore children and it is good for 10 years. The dr. said that because I'd already had a child, the IUD would have a better success rate for me and that the fitting wouldn't hurt so much. It did increase my periods for about a year. I had to use both a super plus tampon (which I had to change every two hours) and a pad in case it leaked. But now my periods are pretty regular again. I recommend them to people. But that's just me and my experience. :)

Unfortunately, I won't have the option for Mirena because I need to use a non-hormonal birth control due to having a gene for factor five (increases my chances for blood clots.) I guess the good thing is that if I experience any problems, I can always have it removed. I'll def find out about the medicine for the nerve block, as I have never had kids and am concerned this could be really painful. Mermaid123, that would be great if you could find the name! Hi, I have one, I've had it since my son, who's now 8 years old, was 2 months. I've never had any problem with it, I'm supposed to get it removed in 2 more years since it can only stay in for 10.
The only thing is -and I'm not even sure if its IUD related- that something deep penetration is a little painful. I have to be careful with certain positions or I feel like a kind of a sharp pain in my uterus.
I have the one you're talking about, the "copper T' and it was pretty easy and quick to insert.

Used to work for GYN and everyone is different as far as their experience with it, including having it put in sometimes women that have had children find it uncomfortable to have it inserted while other women who never gave birth are just fine.

Diana--there are actually a lot of women that get positional discomfort so it may just be normal and have nothing to do with the IUD, either way ask you Dr next time you go about it, thats what they are there for.

Just date guys that are fixed.
