I just broke off the relationship with a man I've dated for 4 years. He is very sweet and kind but is not able to get his finances straight. Four years ago, he told me he was going to do bankruptcy. I reassured him that there is life after bankruptcy if that's what he needed to do. We fell in love. He works hard, pays his bills, is a wonderful man to me and my son. A year later, he finally had saved the money for the bankruptcy but mentions that he hadn't filed his taxes for the last "few" years. When asked how many years, he said, he wasn't sure. He was going to meet with a CPA and work on that. Another year later, no progress. I tried to encourage, ask if I could help in any way, without sounding too pushy but this is the man I thought I was going to marry. He has his house. I have mine. We continued to date for 4 years and now, still no progress in the unfiled taxes. He has one excuse after another, a trauma, doesn't have the money, or something and so taxes are not straightened out yet. The bankruptcy is paid and ready to be filed but not filed due to waiting on the taxes. Thank goodness I've kept my finances separate. I'm tired of waiting for this man to get things in order so we can marry. I'm getting older and want to marry. I can't marry him now and take on his bad financial situation. He seems to be overwhelmed and needs someone to tell him what to do. I even tried that, in a nice way 6 months ago, and still no progress. So, I ended it. I'm sad. I love him. I don't understand why he let his taxes go. Asking why doesn't help me. He's the sweetest man I've ever known but the worst with finances. He's hurt. He loves me and my son. He said he's not giving up on us. I don't know if I should wait longer or just move on. Help!

Hey All...I hope that you have a lovely, peaceful beginning of your weekI have a bunch of chores that need doing but may put them off til tomorrow and just hang out with my landlord/roomie todayWhat about you?...Anything special going on?Have a great day and take good care of you!!..Xo

If you enjoy his company, love him and he is kind and you have your own home, your own finances.. who cares about his finances?
I could see it if you were young and wanted to start a family, but if you are old and already have a son, it seems like you can take care of yourself financially.
I understand wanting it "all".. I hope you are able to find a loving, kind man who has it all together.
but kindness is way more rare than financial success in my opinion, but you have every right to decide what is important to YOU.
check out this lady with the opposite problem! ha ha

Good luck
My thoughts, besides her points, problems with the IRS can lead to more than just financial issues, like ummm jail time. I doubt if you married him that they could go after you for his deception, but in this crazy world, I wouldn't want to find out.
I do think, too, if you don't mind my saying, that the sweet guy has no problem with intentionally breaking the law for whatever reason, which in my opinion, takes a certain amount of deception, manipulation, cheating, and lying, not to mention irresponsibility. I can't think of one "sweet" person I know with those characteristics. It would be "sweet" of him to show his love by resolving this & I sincerely hope he does for all three of you!
Don't do it to yourself. I know several men who only filed taxes when threatened with jail time for not submitting. Even then, they procrastinated. You don't need that kind of stuff in your life.
Wise to end it now. It's unlikely he will change this behaviour, and unless you want to be his mother and banker for the rest of your life.......
Money is the number 1 reason for divorce. Drill down - and it's generally one irresponsible partner, and one who can't cope with it.
This could be worked on ... In the grand scheme of things it's not what is the most important I don't think
I don't have any family left and if I had a choice between seeing those I loved even one more time or money it would be love for sure
I 'hear' what you're saying that you are more secure financially and that you want your son secure... If you love this man though I think you could probably work things out with some help or guidance with finances and if he is wanting to work on these things to improve
And that you are in no way accountable for his debt
Big hug in whatever you decide.....xo
Relationships, how we are with people, how we love someone and get disgusted with them all at the same time... it's just complicated. That makes it hard too.
Hang in there, take it a day at a time.
