Yesterday I read some sortof quote about having expectations about the people you care about. I've already known this up till now but never wanted to truly believe.
I believe I am right now where I'm suppose to be. I can't expect to change Roomie because if he wanted to he would. If you have expectations going into anything it usually will always lead to disappointment. I think for the longest time I thought if we got married it would change things, but I know that it won't. He will still ignore me and I will still be unhappy. The last few days I have been telling myself to be more accepting of my life. Accept myself, accept where I'm at right now. I've been trying to focus more on the everyday things .laundry, cooking, cats and chickens. If I keep worrying about things I can't change then I am missing out on the simplistist good things in life. Quality over Quantity.

I haven't written in my diary on my computer since May because I thought that my computer was dying. I got away from writing but my computer is hanging in there. I think that I will start writing in it again. It's so therapeutic.

Years ago, I won a mirrored armoire from my job. It's in my bedroom but I rarely stand in front of it. Yesterday, I had to have a dexascan done so I had to change into a gown. There was a full length mirror in the changing room. I'm aware that I gained 5 to 7 pounds over the last year from cheating on Keto but I didn't know what it looked like. It was a reality check.
When I got married at 24, I thought things would change. At 36, after my divorce, I was engaged, but wasn't going to say "I do" until things did change. They didn't.
At 39, I found a man who didn't need changing. Still in love with him (and married to him) 20 years later.
But I think there are other kinds of expectations that set us up for real disappointment. Like expecting people to change or try to be just like us or to be in the same place emotionally or mentally as us. So in that sense, managing expectations is important. Most people show us exactly who they are all the time. We just don’t pay attention or we don’t believe it. Or we think that the love will be enough to over come it or that each other will change. It so rarely happens. I think sometimes it’s even deeper than if a person wanted to change, they would. Sometimes, I think it’s more about if the person knew how, knew better, they would.
I am married to someone who is very different from me and I think what keeps the train on the track is affection and a sense of companionship, and having a few important things we share an interest in. But otherwise, it’s a challenge to find common ground; it comes down to accepting each of us as we are. I don’t look to change him and he doesn’t look to change me. We have separate things we enjoy and accept that it’s ok to be independent as well as together. It’s hardly perfect and some days, I think, ugh this is bananas but it has ultimately worked so far.
Acceptance brings peace and I think peace brings clarity. So to me, that’s a beautiful thing whatever happens in the relationship.
However, it is taxing when it is costing your own peace of mind and sanity. Accommodating someone for prolonged unmet expectations is stressful.
Ultimately, independent happiness and harmony are the way the spirit goes about life.
