I just got back from a therapy session. I had a breakthrough, actually, in regards to my boyfriend. I was telling her about this distance that is between him and I, which has actually always been there. Its like there is a wall and he is really guarding himself emotionally, and the whole not-letting-me-stay-to-sleep-at-his-house-when-he-leaves-for-work-early-in-the-mornings is a metaphor for our relationship. Hes not letting me fully in, hes not opening up to me the way he wants me to open up to him. He wants me to tell him things and come to him when Im upset.but does he do that with me? Does he tell me things that are personal and full of emotion, or really anything except fluff? No. To be honest, I really dont know him all that well. I dont know much of anything thats really personal about him. And he clearly has been like this with other girls, by dumping them when they get upset over things that he finds stupid. Kind of like he did with me. I only know a few personal things about him, like how his dad was hard on him growing up and right after high school, made him think he was a failure or something. So he moved out of his parents house, told them he wouldnt need their help with anything, and became an overly self-sufficient person.
So, his dad was tough and critical. He felt criticized and insecure. So he overcompensated by becoming really independent, focused on himself and guarded so people wouldnt see his insecurities and flaws. Because if I ever say what I dont like or what I need that he isnt giving me, he feels like Im criticizing him, when Im not. When I tell him that I am friends with a guy at work, he asks questions and acts like Im hiding something, because hes jealous and insecure. He just doesnt want me to know that. After he went through my phone months ago and told me he felt crazy and never wanted to feel that way, he became more distant. He only asked to see my phone one other time, and a different time he said he felt insecure when I looked at my phone but acted like I was hiding something, when I really wasn't. He doesnt like feeling that way, like maybe he isnt good enough or that hes feeling more than what hes comfortable with. I get it. But I dont like it. I like when a guy shows me that they care, when theyre jealous and when theyre insecure. I like knowing that I mean that much to someone. But he is emotionally unavailable. That was what I realized today, along with the fact that he has issues and is insecure and avoids things so he doesnt have to feel or deal. Four words stood out from my session today: trust, avoidance, distance and insecurity. He is insecure and has a hard time trusting people, therefore he creates distance so he doesnt get hurt and tends to avoid situations that are even remotely serious. He wants happy and fun all the time, and yes he will talk and communicate during serious conversations or arguments but after the conversation or argument is over, he goes back to being more distant than before. He doesnt handle disagreements well, because I think he always feels like hes being attacked when he does something that upsets someone. Which is why he rarely takes responsibility for his mistakes and tends to put the blame on someone or something else. Like the time he insulted a girlfriend at a party when he was younger. She didnt say anything about it at the time but told him how she felt the next day, and he dumped her because he thought it was stupid and didnt want to deal with it. Maybe this is why hes 35 years old, never been engaged, no children.because he is emotionally unavailable.
He only truly opens up when hes drunk. He was drinking with his friend a few weekends ago and he texted me, telling me how he truly feels about me, that he loves me, and telling me about his aunt that has breast cancer (that I never knew about until then), that he loves her, hes afraid to talk to her because he doesnt know what to say, hes afraid of losing her, he wants to go see her but doesnt want to impose. This was the realest conversation Ive ever had with him, and it is sad that he had to be drunk to have it. I told him that she would love to see him and it may take her mind off of her issues by having him around. That it would comfort her and make him happy to have spent time with her too. At the end of the conversation he said he was sorry for dumping all of that on me. I told him I LIKE when he opens up to me and I like being there for him. We have not discussed her much since and he has not opened up about anything else. This is my dilemma.
My therapist told me that its great that Im realizing this is who he is, and it isnt about me. She said that I can give it some time, give him the space he seems to want, and if he brings up the fact that Im more distant, just say that I was respecting what he wants. That maybe he will realize that he wants more of me like I want more of him, instead of just a fluffy, distant relationship with no true emotional connection. It scares me, though, because I know what I want. I want a closer relationship, where I feel like were really good friends. Where I can open up to him and that he will open up to me and it wont feel like I need to pull teeth or get him drunk to find out his true feelings about things. I feel like even if I give him this distance that he wants, and that Ive actually been feeling toward him lately, that he wont even be phased by it. He's a really good guy but, I don't feel that emotional bond with him and it doesn't feel like anyone actually gets to have that bond with him. I guess I don't know what to do to get it, and I'm starting to wonder if just ending the relationship is the only way to go.
Any thoughts and advice would be much appreciated.

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

Based on my own experience your boyfriend seems to be trying very hard to work AROUND his problem rather than through it.
His actions regarding opening up to you indicate to me that his self-esteem and self-worth may still be in a fragile stage of recovery after all the previous times they were decimated by people he felt he could trust. If this is what's going on then the act of opening up could feel like opening the window to a room you're building a house of cards in (to him).
Getting him to open up means helping him to mend his sense of self. As he gets better and his ability to trust others improves it should become easier for him to open up to you. Trying to rush this process will just make him close up more.
Really, he needs to be seeing a therapist who specializes or is trained in treating adult attachment style problems and emotional/psychological abuse. This way he can learn how to process the damage that was done in a healthy way.
From what I've read about treating these types of problems it also sounds like it would be very beneficial for both of you if you attended those sessions with him in order to provide him with support and also to get more insight into how his mind is working.
Some people get really comfortable behind the hurt, unconquerable presence and actually enjoy when someone caring comes along and tries to " save " them and " teach them how to really love someone ".
This type of person takes and gives back just enough to keep the other person interested and hanging on.
I really hope that he is not one of those people.
I am no expert, but I think at this point in the relationship maybe a discussion needs to happen seriously about where this is going. It is extremely difficult to get a person to Treat you the way you want to be treated after they have already became habituated to treat you much less than what you want.
The reason why I m saying this is because I am in a relationship that started off like this and it was a huge amount of work and break ups to have my partner give emotionally and physically like he should and love me the way I deserve to be loved. Sometimes the old behaviors come through on occasion and it riles me up to no end.
I don't want this for you. All I am saying is - you deserve it nowZ you deserve the trust, the care and complete transparency.. It should not be this painful.
If I am Ever single, I would never take on a project like this again.
I used to be a woman who loves too much. I learned the hard way.
"You didn't break him. It isn't your JOB (project) to FIX HIM.
Unless you enjoy this too much to quit, I'd advise dumping him.
We are not suppose to be torn up inside. There is plenty of that down the road when people are together for a long time.. You know?
I did happen to have a talk with him tonight, just about how I don't really know much about him and I asked if he feels that he knows me, and he said he doesn't know all that much. I told him that I can't open up to someone who isn't opening up to me. It doesn't feel fair and I will feel safe to open up with him when he opens up with me. So he told me a story about his childhood, another about how his dad was tough on him and would whip him and his sister with a belt when they were bad. He's never acted like his dad was abusive and he was saying if he lost his dad, he wouldn't know what to do. So apparently they have a pretty good relationship but i don't know all that much. Then I asked him what his fears are, which he didn't talk about very easily....but he told me basically he's afraid of failure and of losing the people he loves. But I was happy that he opened up the way he did tonight. After a few hours I decided to go home because i didn't want to have to be up at 6am and drive home when he leaves for work (issue I've talked about in a previous post). So I told him I was going home, that I had some things that I wanted to get done before bed and i didn't want to have to go home early in the morning. He asked if I'm just focused on him, and I said I am. He said he was sad that I was leaving but understood, and I kissed him and left. He texted me 10 mins later telling me to text him that I was okay because an ambulance drove by after I left and he was worried. He also texted "I have another fear. I'm afraid of losing you." It made me smile as soon as I read it because I know he's being sincere and he really does love me. I responded telling him I am okay and that I am very happy that he opened up to me and told me that. His response: "I am just not very good at that stuff."
I would expect these fears to be subsiding at this point. You are not dependent on him on any way, you are not money hungry and you are not a nymphoniac. What other reason other than your feelings for him would keep you in this relationship? As an intelligent man, he should be able to figure this out at this stage.
I just don't want this to turn into 5 uses of dating... 10 years of engagement...
Sorry, maybe I am assuming here that you want engagement and marriage and kids. In the perfect world how do you see your relationship? Do you want these things? are you ok with living in separate homes? What's your vision?
I want Everything. I be been engaged for a long time now - 3 years - but we are basically living as husband and wife. We have joint possessions and money, we live together, we have the same medical account, we have legal documents appointing us as decision makers for each other, etc. we have not gone through with the marriage yet because there is one last issue that needs to be addressed before we marry. I will not sign the papers until it is resolved, but it has nothing to do with trust..
He makes you leave when he does? Even if you don't have any where to be and could sleep for a bit?
I don't think that has anything to do with his "anxiety issues" how weird! He sleeps with you, right? so he can't be THAT anxious! ha ha... I guess his horniness over rides his anxiety!
I wouldn't go for that at all. I would tell him if he is too "anxious" to let me stay in his apartment alone for a couple of hours then he shouldn't be letting me touch his naked body! sheesh.
good luck!
I won't be staying in a relationship if I feel that being engaged and married is something that isn't going to happen. I refuse. He says he wants marriage and kids and he wants it with me, but.....he's afraid of that sort of commitment in general (marriage) because the divorce rate is so high and he doesn't want to get divorced. He also said he doesn't want to turn out like his married friends who all seem to question their marriages and kids...wishing they could be single again...and that he expects those types of thoughts to happen once he's married. I don't like that he feels that way, and I asked him "why would anyone want to marry you if you expect to regret the marriage at some point?" He said it seems like a thought that almost every married person has. It just doesn't feel safe to me. I want a man who isn't going to have this mindset that he's going to want to be single once he's married and in a seriously committed relationship. I know this is a fear of his but my fear is being married to someone who regrets having gotten married at all....and then starts looking elsewhere for excitement.
Obviously I am being sarcastic. I just don't get it. I would much rather let a person hang out in my house without me than to let them have access to my body, but that is just the way of our backwards world.
again... good luck!
Months..
I have to agree with Shasta - he lets you in his house and sleeps with you but had all these trust issues. Btw.. Not that I am minimizing his situation, I m sure to was very painful to him , but there are people , including myself, who have endured much worse than being belted by their parent and have ability to love and trust people. I understand WHY people may become mistrustful , but at one point we have to get over this stuff and move on.
It is not your cross to bear , you are not the one who whipped him, this is why I think it is kind a BS excuse. I have heard all these lines from my SO.. " my father this and that, I don't want to get hurt , no marriages ever work out ". He has never been married neither have your BF. I have been married TWICE. Marriages don't work out most of the time because both people make bad decisions and then refuse to stick it out when s--t hits the fan.
You are very smart and your intuition is right on. Idk if this guy is worth all this stress. I kind of feel like there is a connection there between you two, but he really needs to grow up emotinally.
I have dated men who acted like normal people -- unfortunately I am attracted to jerks - so I chose one to be with and he surprisingly
Reformed into a reliable husband.
Here is what normal men do : they spend time with you, they get to know you, they romance you, they bring you to meet their family, he wants to meet yours to see how well both of you will fit in as a couple because marriage is not only about love between you two, but it also about joining two groups of strangers together forever when you have children. Normal guys understand that and this is how they test you if you can be trusted. They don't make empty promises, their actions speak louder than words. If a man will get out of bed at 4 am to get you a chocolate cream pie in another town or is there for you during a family crisis or if you are having surgery and look like a disaster he will not leave your side, you don't have to question his loyalty.
If all a man does is tell you how sexy you are and snows you with other flattery, it doesn't really mean much in the long run.
Secure men give you the keys to see what you will do with these keys because they know that if you try to hurt them, they will bounce back no problem, because they are THAT secure in themselves.
Ok.. Rant over lol
He says he will let you stay when he trusts you, and when would that be? What will it take for him to trust you? This man has narcissistic tendencies, and will put himself first over you any day, know that. To involve yourself with someone like him, will always mean his desires come before yours.
You, and your therapist, are making far too many excuses for him, and that's never a good thing, or a good way to start a relationship. If it isn't on an even keel, it won't sail upright, or at all.
Wishing you well.
I know of a couple of people who do and we aren't the best at relationships without therapy
There is certainly healing to be had however I do think many people do need some help
I know of 2 people that I am close to now that have major trust issues... One is the boyfriend of a family member... They have been together 12 years and she's still hoping that in time they will live together... I really doubt it will ever happen.... She's the giver in this relationship and I don't see that she gets much back however accepts that he was traumatized and so she is empathic to a fault in my mind
Another is a close friend who I know will never live with someone... Huge trust issues..
I think it's important to be aware of your needs and it's wonderful that you're discussing this and gaining good advise from your therapist now... It's important that your needs are met... Big hug....xo
