Emotionally distant man (or is it me?)

Well, I saw him yesterday for the first time since he started his job on Monday. we met in the middle of the city, and I got this huge sense of anger and annoyance walking up to him because he looked so cocky and full of himself when he was walking towards me. Evidently it's so obvious when he feels like that because I know him so well and can read him like a book. It was so hot out that I was flustered and in a bitchy mood, so I didn't really say much and we took the metro home. We got off at a stop near his house and got sandwiches for dinner, I think we were both silently on edge because of the heat. Sometimes, there's just unspoken tension between us for no reason. I have no idea who brings it to the table. Either we are incredibly compatible and in love with each other, or disconnected and tense. Sometimes I feel like he is SO invested in our conversations and time together, other times I feel like he is distant and into himself. Yesterday he was all about himself. I have been hearing about this fucking job 24/7. I have told him how proud I am of him, how happy I am, how he deserves it. I listen, I try to understand but what he's doing isn't in my industry so mainly I ask questions or just listen. He has been talking about himself for the past three days. Granted I'm in graduate school, but I have a part time job in the finance industry doing secretarial things (its not important or stressful, but it's still a job and a responsibilty). At dinner he was telling me about something he wants to do for work, an organization or something he wants to become affiliated with. I said "welcome to the world of work and school" and he goes "yeah except you don't work as hard as me, and I don't study as hard as you". I basically said yes, that's true, but my job deserves some recognition too. You don't know what I do at work because I never tell you. Just because I'm part time doesn't mean I'm not as important! He looks at me with fire in his eyes and goes "fuck you". I was so embarrassed. We were in a public restaurant and he said that! More importantly, is it EVER okay to say fuck you to your girlfriend under ANY circumstance??? What I said was maybe a little aggressive but he never asks me about my job, at least not in the past three days, it's been all about him. And he's walked around with complete arrogance. What he does isn't even that special- hell 90% of my friends have equal or better jobs than him. I felt dismissed and angry at him. Was he being full of himself or was I asking for too much? I love him so very much but he is one of the most aggressive people I know.
A couple days ago I mentioned I may go to dinner for one of my coworker's birthdays who is a male. I told him and he immediately said "you know he only invited you to get in your pants." I asked him why he thought that and he said "because that's something I would do...". He got very passive aggressive and was making comments about how I should have my reasoning about me when I go out with them and how he thinks sometimes I flirt and take it too far. All in all he admitted that he was getting too jealous. It angers me that he acts possessive like this, and then the next day, when we hang out, says fuck you to me. In our past, he has either been communicative or distant. He's told me some days he wants to talk to me, other days he wants nothing to do with me. I buy him new things because he's not financially 100% comfortable, and I like to see him happy with new items like clothing and other things to make his life easier. He does very little to return, and can't even emotionally reciprocate. Last night, before we went to bed, I sat outside of his place on the patio and just thought to myself how in love I was with him, and wondered when he would go back to being his friendly and invested self. Some days he is a different person. I question myself though, and wonder if I'm making it more dramatic in my head or if he really is hot and cold. He came outside with me (it took him about a half hour to realize I left his living room), and I was expecting to have a nice conversation about ANYTHING but himself. In the past, we've had great moments where he's told me how beautiful I look and we've talked about future plans, things we want to do, my family and his, and our relationship. It stings and burns and hurts me when I feel like he's emotionally disconnected and only interested in himself on certain days. I wonder how he can flip like that. Of course, he starts talking about random shit- yelling at people on the street (in a joking way) and literally talking about work again. The whole night I felt like his mind was somewhere else. We've been dating a year, I don't expect every day to be loving and gushing over each other but jesus, I haven't seen him all week and that's what he says.
I worry, now that last night didn't go so well, and his new job, he'll want to go out this weekend and not make an effort to see me. What's going to happen on Friday night? Will he ask to hang out with me? Should I continue to make the effort and pursue him? How do I get him back to his old self and invested in me again? Will he even give me the courtesy of telling me his plans or will I have to track him down? I feel like I don't exist in his eyes. Every day I have anxiety about whether or not I'M going to be the one to make the first move, or whether or not he'll be into me that day. It's hell, but I am so in love with him too. The anxiety physically makes me ill.

Many of you know Mr K told me to "shut your mouth" in March 2025 when we took a road trip to Alpena Michigan. Since that time, we have had lots of ups and downs but I have never intentionally hurt Mr K in anyway. And when we first started dating in 2024 he let me know, although he is an engineer by degree, he has an extremely low EQ. Overall, he is ok (not off the charts nice like other guys in...

What would be a true, 100 percent deal breaker for you? What WON'T you put up with?
There is very obviously not a mutual partnership going on here, and it seems to me that you are both equally contributing to it.
If you BOTH cant let it go and focus on moving forward together in a healthy way, this is only going to snowball as more resentment, agression, and stress build up in the relationship. The problems will fester and feed on themselves.
How long are you willing to live your life this way..?
Your bf is not treating you how you deserve to be treated. I'm not saying he's not treating you like he deserves you as a gf... but he's not even treating you with the minimum consideration and respect that you deserve as another human being.
By not reacting to his initial swearing at you, to his condensation, to his self absorption, to his vanity, etc. you're essentially teaching him that his pushing the boundaries as far as he's pushing them is okay with you.
I suggest you take inventory of your life. Make a list of what he's done that you would consider him pushing a boundary, how it's affected you in a negative way and how you would expect him to deal with a similar situation in the future... an example would be: him swearing at you was unbelievably childish and uncalled for + disrespectful to you. It's affected you in a negative way because it is disrespectful and it's not okay with you for someone to take conversations to that level as it loses your respect for him and shows he's not able to deal with having a sensitive topic -- all things that don't make you want to be with him. How you expect him to deal with it in the future is to not think that swearing could ever be condone in any circumstance whether it be within your relationship or even if you end up being friends.
After you list your list to him... tell him you're going to take a break from your relationship to help him consider these issues. If he's willing to work on them and show you the commitment to do so then you can talk about it in a few weeks. If not, then the break will indicate a break up.
In the end his character has come out and is obviously unable to deal with the added pressures and excrement of his new job. He needs time to himself to reconsider how his lack of good behavior is affecting those around him and put reigns on it before it escalates.
Good luck to you, hope what I mentioned above made sense.
Rosa
You are both creating a never ending whirlpool of negativity and anger. You dont trust him, he doesnt care enough to make you feel better and secure, you are angry about that.
What do you see happening here next?
He's obviously starting something new that's very exciting and very important to him. What you're seeing his arrogance maybe a sense of self pride. Anyone with a new job Something that's important to them, something they've worked towards is going to talk about it. This new job, as well is all that he's doing. Do you not think when there's only one thing you're doing but it may be the main focus of a conversation?
You were very upset when he started this job. You said very clearly that you ASSUMED he was going to be very self absorbed about it. Maybe you're only seeing what you want to.
Not very healthy.
I can see why he's pissed. He is SO excited about his new job but you just put him down. I don't blame him for saying "fuck you" in public! I mean you admit your own attitude is "90% of my friends have better jobs". Really, WHO CARES?!? Apparently he can see your attitude toward him and it's making him mad. After three days you're already to the point of being tired of hearing about his new job?
My suggestion is to go find a guy who has a job that is up to your standards. I don't understand why you're so judgmental when you are a secretary..... (Do you know how bad the job market is these days?!?)
Idk you and idk your guy, but i can feel it in some odd way that you have the same kind of worry that i had when i started a relationship with someone. He didn't do anything yet at that time and i already had this u settling feeling in my gut. I was freaking out but i saw no real reasons, i doubted myself, he reassured me i was great and the only one.
To make the long story short - he had an affair for months behind my back.
I know you wont leave this guy just yet, because we all have to find out for ourselves what happens next, i just want you to listen to your self and be aware and know that if he does cheat there is nothing you can do to prevent it.
From reading your posts, it seems like your entire reaction to this wonderful job opportunity is that you're afraid he'll leave you, you think he is full of himself, and you want him to stop talking about it. You even admitted you were in a bitchy mood. Some of the other things you have said on here about him have been downright ugly. Is it any wonder he may be hot and cold towards you? You seem to be jealous of him and have the need to put him down.
You've also mentioned needing to take xanax every night due to the constant anxiety of this relationship. This is not healthy. Love should not lead to you to self medicating. It should not lead to you being insecure and jealous instead of being happy for him.
Aronia said, "I know you wont leave this guy just yet, because we all have to find out for ourselves what happens next, i just want you to listen to your self and be aware and know that if he does cheat there is nothing you can do to prevent it."
I couldn't term it any more perfect than that. You aren't going to break it off until you see if for yourself...until you simply cannot take anymore. Been there, done that. And, as Aronia said, there is NOTHING you can possibly do to prevent him from cheating on you...not a darn thing. If he's going to, he's going to. Same goes for if he's tired of the relationship and wants to let it go...there's not anything you'll be able to say and do to prevent that.
You are making yourself insane...life is so not this way. Healthy RELATIONSHIPS are not this way!
Very simply, this relationship is probably not ever going to be what you want it to be. Maybe it's you, maybe it's him...it doesn't really matter. But, at this stage, at one year, it's still pretty new. Do you really want to live this way forever? I really hope you don't. I promise there is better out there. I found it and so do others. Now, the ex I was this crazy over is no longer on this Earth.
It WILL be okay but, most importantly, no matter what happens, YOU will be okay. No person is worth this kind of craziness.

I think by your own behavior, leaving his out of it, you show that you are very dependent on him to make you be okay. That is terrifying. When you know you'll be okay no matter what, it won't be such a big deal. I think that's where you should focus your energy, rather then trying to get the peacock suit back.
A man who is verbally and emotionally abusive often becomes PHYSICALLY abusive later. "When somebody shows you who they are, BELIEVE THEM." Don't make excuses for him.
