At the very least it would be a start. Emailing is fine as well but if you really want to know if this could turn into a serious relationship in my opinion it is better to hang out with him as friends for awhile and take it from there. Typed words such as emailing can easily be misunderstood because of the typed words and that is why I think it is better to hang out face to face. Hope this helps a bit. Wishing you the very best.
