But, this is the second time in just as many months that this has happened.
Does he have family issues? Can he not say "no" to people?
The issue, at least in part, seems to be that he doesn't make you a priority.
Idk why, but I get the feeling that he bumps you when better plans come along. Of course, I don't know the whole story...
In all aspects I am not sure if he cancelled any specific plans or not so perhaps to him he feels it is ok to celebrate the anniversary on Thursday. It does not necessarily mean he is putting you second because his dad and brother are coming over the weekend. If on the other hand he specifically made plans and a evening set aside so the two of you could celebrate your anniversary together then I do agree he could simply tell his family sure come on down but my girl and I will be out for awhile to celebrate are upcoming anniversary. I am pretty sure they would understand and respect that and find something to do for a few or hours or so.
Anyway have a talk with your b/f and let him know how you feel. Perhaps you both can work this out so you both will feel happy and comfortable about the happy occasion coming up. If the day you celebrate means a great deal to you then you need to let him know this and why. He simply just may not feel it is that huge of an issue if he does not what it means to you. Hopefully this helps a bit for you and I hope that no matter what happens you both have a wonderful time together. Being together for a year is a great thing so congrats to you both:)
But this is different to me. This is an occasion that is just ours and very important to me. Plus he spent a whole "guys weekend" with his father and dad about a month ago.
I feel like my feelings and our anniversary are unimportant to him!
Our dinner was never specifically set as "friday" (our anniversary) but it was clearly implied as he does not like to go anywhere on weekdays when he has to work at 8am.
Plus I reminded him a few hours before his dad called that I had asked off for the whole weekend so we could do stuff for our anniversary and his birthday.
Have you tried talking to him? It doesn't seem to be an issue that he's spending time with his family (as others have implied), rather that he's breaking plans with you for them. Not cool, IMHO. If he only gets to see them every so often, he needs to make it clear that last minute plans aren't an option. Some people make plans at the last minute. I am not one of them, as I have a high stress level and considerate rude for people to expect me to drop things at the last minute for them. I'm thinking that maybe his family is made up of last minute plans type of people, and your bf just can't say no. Perhaps a boundary issue?
I'm so sorry that things happened this way. Perhaps you could talk to him in a calm way. Say that anniversaries are very important to you and this day is important because it marks one year of you being together. Tell him that you are hurt by him not making time for you on a day that means so much to you.
I totally get that to some guys, dates mean nothing. Or so they say until a day is important to THEM...but I digress. I am a TOTAL holiday person, so non-holiday people just aren't on my wavelength.
But remember, your FEELINGS are NEVER wrong! They are never invalid, or illogical. Thoughts can be illogical, but not feelings.
Thanks for the advice :)
