This is about my kid. I want to give a little background - my daughter is 13. She is a really good kid and stuck on my like glue right now.
Her life has been complicated, but much less traumatic that other kids I know. So - her life : she lost a a reltionship with her father recently when she started to get older. Before that they were really, really close. This happened because she started seeing the same things which caused he and I to divorce. I didn't do to anything to cause it. in fact , I tried to help nurture their relationship.
Then, I had my accident and was sick for a long time and she had little supervison from me, she was mostly with her father.
Once I got back on my feet about 1.5 years later, I took her with me and then she got in trouble at school for sexting with a boy and doing/saying some really inappropriate things to friends. It affected her deeply, I took her to counseling and had some straight up talks with her about sex and relationships and her self worth and Behaviour. She got into sports, excelled at school and tuerned right around. This was 3 years ago. She has not been spending any time with boys and turning down dates for dances or anyone asking her out at school.
So, last week she completely caught me off guard, because she admitted that last August , when she was playing Sims game online , she met a boy from Arizona and they have been in a long term relationship/ friendship ever since. She showed me his texts and their conversations are extremely deep and mature and heart felt. They are discussing real life's problems.. Not some stupid crap.
I was floored and especially since this has been going on for a year and they NEVER met. They skype and he is really a boy, not some pervert.
She told me he wants to move to our town for college in 2 years.
I am not sure what to think about this... Just so surprised...
I believe that teenagers can have meaningful relationships just like adults. My first one was at 14 and it was very adult, so I have no doubt that they have some strong connection going on...
I m just afraid that she will be disappointed... The odds are against them, even if they continue to enjoy this friendship.
What do you guys think?

Once again I've had a fever today. I'm not going to the hospital because that's a huge waste of time but I did schedule a dr appointment for Wednesday afternoon.

Yes, she'll probably be disappointed. So you discourage them from moving in together when he first gets here. Or if they do, you look for a renting situation where it's month to month, rather than a year's lease. And just like meeting anyone new...you hope that most of their time will initially be spent in the company of other people.
If he hits her...you have an open door policy 24/7.
My rule with my kids is that they'll be ready for sex when they're old enough to sit at the kitchen table with me and discuss what they'll do if there's a pregnancy.
If someone is going to be devastated if there is an abortion, or if one wants to keep the baby...now's the time to know.
We talk about sex and women's bodies and kids and emotional aspects of a relationship..
As of right now, both of my kids want to wait to have sex until marriage. I know it is completely unrealistic these days, but I would rather have them try than not and my phylisopht is exactly like yours, Patti : " before you choose to have sex with your partner, ask yourself if you are willing to take the risk that this person will forever be the parent of your child? " " are you ready to be tied to them for the rest of your life ?"
I discourage abortion and focus more on prevention , but I let the kids know that I will help them with whatever they choose to do.
It sounds like they are both together kids and have ambition so who knows where it may go and you sound like a really good mom!... Big hug...xo
I think preparing your child for sex is important but encouraging waiting is just as important. I think it requires constant reinforcement because what they seem to understand and believe today can go completely out the window tomorrow.
As far as not wanting her to be disappointed, I think that's natural, but being disappointed, that's how you learn to survive and thrive even when things hurt, even when things don't work out. It's important to go through that. In fact, I wish more parents let their kids experience a bit of that, in that it prepares them for adulthood. It's not that you want them to be disappointed, but that if we protect them too much, how will they ever learn to cope when things get hard, to handle themselves when things don't turn out they way they want, etc.
She said she is not in a rush to get married young and if they make it for 2 more years , she wants to get to know him in real life before she will even consider having sex.
How did my little girl become a woman overnight ?? These are such grown up decisions !!!! I am SO proud .
My concerns are first, that she was sexting at 10. You did say she got help which was awesome. I would also think you mentioned this to her pediatrician because hypersexuality (which sexting is at 10 years of age) can be organic in nature. I assume the therapist and/or pediatrician ruled out anything clinically.
I think its not abnormal for a 13 year old girl to develop feelings for a boy; however, my concern would be how she would process these feelings. A 13 year old girl is not developed enough intellectually to be able to separate what real love is and what is 'puppy love' if you will or what is sexual interest/manipulation.
You did say you saw him on skype, you verified this, and are certain he is really the age he states he is (I am assuming 16 if he is going to college to in two years). I would be concerned of his mention that he wants to buy a plan ticket to see your daughter. Have you spoken to his parents to clarify all of this? If my 16 year old son was talking to a 13 year girl online (again, not alot of 16 year old boys are interested in girls that are 13...but...you have seen him and verified this age) and then planning to 1) not only go to another state for college to be with her, but 2) buying a plane ticket to visit her, I'd want to know. It wouldn't be out of the question if the next time you speak to him on skype to just say, "Hey you guys are developing quite a friendship and are exchanging a lot of ideas, do you mind if I connect with your mom or dad?" I would. I think as parents its our responsibility to be aware. Both are still minors (I hope he is....I really, really do).
I think that if it all checks out (and believe me I would be VERY concerned if a 16 year old wanted to fly out and meet my 13 year old girl), I would also be making sure that she isn't getting too involved in this. Does she have other friends, is she active socially with girls her own age, does she participate in extracurricular activities such as sports or clubs? If her main source of entertainment is talking online, I would be concerned.
Please also know that if this boy is older, she may have shown you the texts or skypes messages, but there are also other programs KIK and Snapchat to name a few, that erase immediately and there is no trace. It would be surprising a 16 year old boy is having generic conversations with a 13 year old girl so much that he wants to get a plane ticket to come see her.
I'm taking another twist on this......her intuition may be telling her something is not right here and she is reaching out to you for help. I'd talk to his parents.
I really kind of like this idea, because this is SO old school and his mother and I are both from similar cultures. She is Mexican and I'm Russian.
I m sure his mother is also worried about this relationship, but on the other hand - they are not having sex and both have a goal of going to college and focusing on school and sports, which is a good thing.
As for these teenagers, they may not be having sex yet, but when alone in the same room, with teenage hormones raging it will most probably be a different story.
I'm sure you will talk to your daughter about safe sex and birth control. Even the nicest, academically excelled girls who thought they could wait until marriage DO get pregnant or STDs..
