In processing food, companies often cover up mediocre tastes with either a lot of sugar or a lot of salt, which are kind of additing in that we need more and more to even taste it after a while.
It is said that we have 4 basic tastes, sweet, sour, bitter and salty. There is another one and this is for savory. Savory seems to be keyed in to glutamic acid, one of the amino acids, and msg is like the sugar companies that try to fool our tongues into thinking we are eating a good food when we are really only eating an extract.
I'll make another thread about umami - savory so we can have a discussion on that. :)
Another food item I found in my search is nagaimo, or mountain yam, which is an Asian root that is very healthful, and I'll post a thread on that too.
Some things are naturally sweet and healthy like, why have orange soda when we can have an orange? We trade artificial flavor and chemicals for real flavor and vitamins and fiber.
