Head and Neck cancers Support Group
Oral cancer or oral cavity cancer, a subtype of head and neck cancer, is any cancerous tissue growth located in the oral cavity. It may arise as a primary lesion originating in any of the oral tissues, by metastasis from a distant site of origin, or by extension from a neighboring anatomic structure, such as the nasal cavity or the maxillary sinus.
I had 35 days straight of radiation & besides the scarring to my throat, it is just now that my oncologyst, thru a blood test, found that it had more or less killed my thyroid function, so I will be on synthroid the rest of my life...oh, my daughter-in-law had thyroid cancer when she was 19 & now at 35, with the thyroid supplement, she too is cancer free.
Don't look at this as a death sentence, by any means.....my cancer was almost a Stage 4 cancer when I went in to my gp for a case of tonsillitus (so I thought),,,,they immediately...same day...got me into an ENT who after looking at my throat...very coldly announced that 64 year old women DON'T get tonsillitus YOU HAVE CANCER. My husband & I both were stunned & the doctor came back & took a biopsy & it came back to be squamous cell carcinoma of the tonsil. I was then rushed to the Thompson Cancer Center & I was taken in & it was decided that I would do Chemo first ......it would take most of a day to get all the drugs in me...then about the third week, I only had to go for treatment 3 days & then I had a pump that delivered the meds 7/24 for the next 2 days. One thing I found, if you have a problem with chemo & diarrhea...if you take Beano, the problems seem to lessen. I figured as Beano puts in the right things to keep your stomach regulated, maybe it would help with the stomach problems....even my chemo oncologyst had other patients try it & it seemed to have the same effect on them....
Even now after 23month post chemo or radiation & it was worth it all....the cancer is defeated & all my tests that OLD people are given....I'm 65 & am now able to do all the same things I did precancer.
As mnotmycancer says, everyone is different & the radiation doesn't cause too many problems until the 3rd week....she also said that it's ok to be scared. I practially vaporlocked on my first session of chemo & as they got me on the scale & took my weight, the whole thing hit...I DO HAVE CANCER....OMG what will this chemo do & broke down in tears. The caring nurses & doctor talked to me & said it was perfectly ok for me to cry...it is scary.
If you do what the doctors want, as they seem to be a special breed of caring medical help; the upbeat positive thinking about beating the cancer is sometimes more important than the medicines....both my psychiatrist & radiational oncologist have said this. Thru having no hair to the other things only a cancer patient can understand.....I used humor. Everyone was commenting on how good I looked....I was 214lbs at the beginning of treatments....when I was done, I had lost 83 lbs & have only gained about 15 back....this isn't a recommended diet to lose weight but it is sometimes it is just such side effects as this that help your spirit.
HUGS & LOVE & wishes for you to have a positive experience & your outcome is like mine.
