As the body ages, many people gain weight. Weight gain is the easiest explanation for an increase in foot width. However, if you have not gained weight, and your ankles are swollen as well as your feet increasing in size, you may want to talk to your doctor about probable causes. There could be anything from a musculo-skeletal problem like a hairline fracture, a sprain, or a stretched ligament, to a circulatory problem. Your doctor would have to obtain a medical history and do an exam to determine the cause of the swollen ankles.
