Graves' Disease Support Group

This disorder is the most common cause of...

My wife was diagnosed with Gravess disease over two years ago and Ive watched her slipping slowly since before then which tells me it may have went undiagnosed for some time. At the time she was diagnosed she had told me how severe it was and that emotions would come into play occasionally but I told her no problem and so as time went on and she claimed to have finally gotten the correct dosage down to combat the problem everything seemed to be fine. Only a couple months ago she has grown so distant from me that its impossible to live with her anymore. Recently I have noticed severe paranoia in where she has her mailing address changed to her moms and slowly moving all of her things out of the house. I noticed she didnt care anymore about what the house looked like and didnt seem to want me to sleep with her because when I would come to bed she just roll over the opposite way, and if I asked her why she was quiet. She would in a smart devilish tone say what do you want me to talk about. She never was much for asking me things in bed, but I would usually make the moves and all was well. Now I cant get near her or even touch her and she is on fire. At first I figured she was cheating on me, which I was having a hard time believing and come to find out it wasnt true. Now she gets up in the morning takes her shower and storms out the door shouting what needs to be done in the house with no breakfast hug or kiss goodbye. The smallest thing sets her off like a time bomb. We got into an argument a couple weeks ago about why she didnt want to make love to me anymore and she went ballistic on me screaming all the problems in her life namely her grandson that has a serious problem and that I have been a no good cheat and I lie to her all the time and on and on and once she started actually hitting me and screaming to the top of her lungs I made statements about her family that I immediately took back. I swear I didnt mean them it was heat of the moment and I felt like an asshole, believe me. These are good people that I love like my own family, but it shut her up. And it was better than hitting her back. I am not a violent person, last Friday I just come home from work to see her backing out of the garage and I waited till she pulled out so I could tell her I was going to the boat that night, then she drove off not even slowing down. Later she said it wasnt her it was her son that was driving. Like that was an good excuse. That same the morning all was well so I couldnt figure what was up. But it pissed me off as it would any other normal person and I called her cell phone and said what the fuck asshole, you could of waited a second so she gets to her mothers house and I am sure she edited what had really happened to make me look like the bad guy and later she told me I played what you said for my family and they hate you too. I asked her if she told them also that she just drove off and could have waited but she cut me short and changed the subject..I havent had the chance to explain myself clearly until today because I am going over there now while my wife is at work and talk to her mother. Now at home when I try and make things right she says she cant forgive what I said and when I ask her to think what led up to me saying that to begin with she ignores my question... It wasnt because she was talking nicely with me over a game of rummy or something, she had lost her mind momentarily and was and still is a nervous wreck at all times. She goes into her own world and will not say a word for hours and when I ask her anything the blame always goes on me. She is very short when I ask a question. Sarcastic , I finally just walk away when she is around to avoid confrontation. The other day she had been threatening to have me thrown out of our house for no reason by calling the cops. I told her she was the one who abandon me; all my stuff is still here. Still I dont understand this Graves disease problem and it takes a lot to push me over the edge to say the thing she makes me say. I am an easy going guy who loves her totally and it just dawned on me this morning that she has that Graves disease and I am not sure if she has been doing the meds or not so I did some Googling and came up with this site and looked at literally hundreds of stories exactly, not close but exactly like mine. And I want to help her badly because they explain that the person has no control over their actions and needs the correct dosage of medicine to bring down the hormone levels being produced. It is vital that this be done NOW. It states if untreated long enough mental problems will occur that are irreversible. I know my wife loves me deep down but this disease is overcoming her and I want my wife back. Her eyes bulge out at times and when she looks at me I feel the creeps. The disease is something to do with the devil I am sure. Now it has come to the point she will not even acknowledge my presence except to shout out a derogatory statement of some petty thing I did like leave my car top off for too long. I almost positive she will go nuts if I even suggest her going to another doctor to get a second opinion of the problem she has. She always tells me she is going to die soon and I really am at a loss but I wont give up on her. One time she even confided in me that she cant help the way she acts sometimes and apologized in tears. At the time I didnt realize that this was so serious but now I do. I am going to talk to her mom who she might listen to get her to a new doctor A.S.A.P... I am so happy I found this group to talk to and I appreciate the help and advice you can offer.
Sincerely,
Jeff Wiley

Welcome to our support group. Graves' disease is very difficult for the patients who are diagnosed with it, and it takes a toll not only on our health, but on our relationships as well.
Part of the problem deals with the fact that our Endo doctors can see our levels as "Perfect" if they fall within a certain range of numbers, and those numbers are an average.
The range for TSH, for example, here where I live is from 0.5 to 5, for example, and once I was told that my levels were "perfect" when my TSH was 4.5. I felt like I was hit by a truck at that level, had hair falling out by the handfuls and was an emotional wreck. I was far from perfect.
It is better to use the Free T4 level, rather than TSH for medicating. Your wife may have levels that are perfect at a different range, and until she finds where her own perfect levels lay, she is not likely to feel better physically or emotionally. Just a small slip up or down in FT4 level has made me feel terrible.
When I was very Hyper, I was also very cranky and exhausted. I would get easily overwhelmed and would lose all interest in things that I used to do. I stopped taking care of household chores, and was quick to fight. I almost lost my job. I also started to isolate myself. I am feeling better now, but am still not perfect.
I have started a support group for family and friends of Graves' disease patients and invite you to join.

I hope everything gets better, soon!

GD definitely can mess up so many of us with this! I didn't have the extreme behavior as you described of your wife, but I made sure to get frequent labs and to make sure my doses are correct so I wouldn't have any such behavior problems like this again.
I'm guessing your wife doesn't know how to work with her disease and if she takes meds, to also work with finding the right doses to stay well and to help with her moods.
Even when I was very ill, I made sure to research all about GD and how to stay well, etc. It was a lot of work because I had so much difficulties concentrating, focusing, etc. So many times I had to reread everything over to make sure I understood everything.
I learned when to lab, how often, how to dose properly, to stay well. Maybe you can encourage your wife to read the thyroid board and learn how to work on getting well.
As difficult as this is, not only do you have to help from your end, your wife has to admit she has a disease and to do her part as well. Encourage her gently as possible and try to be there for her.

Jeff
I'm sorry your wife will have to make the first move to get her health back with your gentle encouragements or stay in denial.
{{{hugs}}} :-(
Give me a break. You love her, yes, by calling her "what the fuck asshole", by belittling her family? Maybe it's you who has a short temper, and maybe it's you who's got mental, or at least you have no idea how to support people?
If I heard these words from my husband, he'd be out there in the cold. You little bastard.
but the shock set in because i loved that little guy and never meant no harm. So now its all clear to me that instead of her hiding the problem along with paranoia and the emotions. So all along as she would just take off and let me keep believin she was cheating or whatever leaving me to guess when i could of simply knon. She still needs the thyroid check agin but i am working on it now. Was it wrong for her to provoke me and not tell me the baby had died? I believs so. Thanks again folks,
Jeff
Not to worry, I do believe many of us do understand what you are going through.
Most of us can experience ongoing GD rage even after any treatments which is often times makes it hard to fine tune and tweak everything properly. It's such a life long disease. I've had this since the beginning of my teenaged years, but it was undiagnosed hypO, not hypER symptoms. I didn't become hypER until 2000.
How old is your wife?
{{{hugs}}}
Hope your wife will make the right choice.
The fact that you are reaching out for advice is a good start. The internet is full of information to help you to understand what is happening to your wife. Treatment takes time. Not weeks....more like months or even years.
I know you were not refering to anyone of us as Devils.... Nor were you trying to insult anyone here. You have found a place where you can get support from those of us who've been there and back. I am on the mend. I had to have Radioactive Iodine treatment.
I look at how I was a year ago and man.....I felt "psychotic" at times. I am so calm now. I can be stuck in rush hour traffic now and not feel like I would like to drive my vehicle like a monster truck over the cars in front of me.... (( little humor there ))
Most importantly my dear.... It's not that your wife doesn't love you or desire you........ Graves disease is notorious for Killing the sex drive. It whacks out your hormones and entire being. Some people experience more severe forms of Graves than others. I am a survivor of some of the nastier outcome of the disease. I am left with permanent heart damage and an immune system that is in need of repair.
In order to help yourself and to aid your wife. Please read up on this disease. The national Graves Disease Foundation has a lot of info.
Best of luck to you and don't give up on your wife.
Hugg's
Gravely Ill......
My boyfriend is very passive aggressive, and doesn't let me know when something bothers him until after I have done it.
For instance, I will ask him if he wants to go to town to get something to eat, and he'll say "sure" and then we'll get in the car and he'll be in a really bad mood. We get to a cafe and then he won't order anything, so I either have to order and then eat by myself, or we get up and leave.
I hate that. I then find out that he didn't really want to go out of town to get something to eat in the first place and is angry with me for "forcing" him to go. I wish he would just TELL me before we go somewhere. It just seems so easy to me to be able to say "No, Hannah, I don't really feel like going out of town. Lets find somewhere in town to eat." you know?
I hate that kind of stuff so much! I have now started to just drop him off at home when he does that and then I go by myself or call a friend.
Long story short:
You should not have to put up with being abused by your wife or anyone else (even if she doesn't mean it and doesn't have control), and while it is completely reasonable to be assertive and to defend yourself when she is making you feel bad, it sounds like from your responses to her (saying things you don't really mean), you may have some trouble with communication.
It is really, really hard to communicate instead of react when someone is making you angry or attacking you, and I know that. But, you have to try to remember that your wife is very ill and needs you to find every ounce of strength you have to understand and support her right now. That doesn't mean that you have to be a carpet and let her walk all over you, but try to communicate your true feelings rather than react and say things that you don't mean.
I still have trouble with my boyfriend, but some of my family have started to read up on my condition, and when I was acting irrational, they would give me space, and then later they would calmly tell me how my behavior was making them feel. It helped so much!
So, I guess if she is feeling anything close to how I was feeling when I wasn't managed it may be helpful to give her some space, and let her know how you are really feeling. Try to remember that she may not be able to process the information at that time, so leaving her notes may help. My mother did that with me.
In any relationship it is better to try to communicate rather than react and try to think about what your real feelings are on the matter and what you really want to say.
I hope everything gets better, soon.
Take care,
Hannah
Jeff I commend you for seeking help and understanding, you are a good person for not turning tail and running when it has gotten so bad. If your wife is so unstable it maybe time to talk a permanent solution, radioactive iodine or thyroidectomy. Then at least she wont have the raging any longer.
I understand you cant force her to do anything but maybe printing off some articles for her on the disease in general and treatment options will help her understand this disease. The mayo clinic web site has some good things and thyroid.org may help also.
For me the worst part of graves was the ability it had to rob me of the joy in my life!! I am 4 weeks post thyroidectomy and I am really enjoying life again, I feel happy for no reason at all and its really amazing.
All the best to you and your wife!!
