I never got the headaches when I went hypo, but every muscle in my body ached. Ibuprofin helped a little. Hot shower. Are you prone to headaches?

I have been there so I understand. Let's hope that your thyroid levels come up. I assume that's the reason why you went off of PTU because your levels dipped down low.

It took me several weeks before I felt better from the headaches. However the joint/muscular pains lasted much longer.

Ok,my doctor was going to give me the RA,i signed all the papers,got the day he was to give me it(the following monday).sent me off to get bloodwork.he called me the next day and said i was hypo.i had been complaining of my goiter spreading,and weight gain.so he cancled my apointment to get the RA.now i'm having headaches and today sore muscles.thanks

Hi Kevin, I am so sorry to hear you've been feeling bad. If the PTU put your levels so low it's possible that could be causing headaches? Please talk to your doctor about these symptoms. Also, make sure they give you blood tests to insure you don't become hyper as this could happen once you are off of the PTU.
What dose of PTU were you on?

i have another blood test next week.he originaly put me on 50mg 4 times a day +20mg of propranolol 4x a day
then he put me on 100mg ptu 4x a day +the blocker above.
now,i'm just on the blocker.and i asked him for some water pills (i was bloated bad)

Hi Kevin...I get headaches as well...I asked my Doc why but she just say's, " well you shouldnt ". I have TED and although Im in remission I still have to tilt my head slightly upwards to see. I think my headaches are caused form having to do this because my neck gets very sore. Before I was diagnosed my Doc's thought it was because of the swelling behind my eyes. Have you had your eyes checked for TED?

jr,no,i'm not prone to headaches,i do get them but i thought it was because i was self employed.lol

I was just wondering how long you'd been on the PTU? You were doing the right thing to split up the PTU into several doses.

Just a thought here, if the PTU worked so well to reduce your thyroid levels from hypER to hypO, why you were going to get an RAI?

Based on the Endo increasing your PTU upwards from 50 mg to 100 mg several times a day, has me wondering if he was trying to raise the TSH levels? TSH levels are not an accurate reading to go by at the beginning of Grave's Disease. It is because of the antibodies that the TSH levels are inaccurate.

If it were me, I'd have the Free T3 and the Free T4 thyroid levels checked and dose the PTU according to these levels. I would want the Free Ts to be in mid range to find out where I feel my best at. Then I would be reducing the PTU a bit at a time and getting my labs done at every six weeks at least to see if the dose reduction for the PTU was enough for me.

After awhile, the TSH levels can be used as a guide once the antibodies have come down.

RAI is not recommended for those with TED.

I'm blessed with an Endo who will allow me to stay on the ATDs (antithyroid drugs) for many years. He has patients on long termed ATDs therapy for over 15+ years. He does not dose by the TSH and doses by the Free Ts and especially that of the Free T4.

TED = Thyroid Eye Disease.

Kevin...TED..Thyroid Eye Disease...is the bulging of the eyes due to swelling of the muscles behind the eyes. I would lite a fire under your doc to get you in to see a Opth as soon as possible. I had severe TED and it is horrible. The sooner you get it looked at the better it is for your eyes. Ted and graves are separate diseases but they have a tendency to go hand in hand. Treatment for TED is different than treatment for Graves. Although, your levels for graves has an impact on your TED.

Just one more thing...I did lots of research on the net when I was first diagnosed and from what I have learned, people with graves and eye involvement are always prescribed PTU. For some reason and the docs dont know why..but... TED responds in a favorable way with PTU.

mm,my doctor took me off the ptu to prepair me for the RAI.
I had been on the ptu for about 4 months
all this time i had been hyper,he just found out three days ago that i was hypo
