Graves-Basedow disease is a medical disorder that may manifest several different conditions including hyperthyroidism (over activity of thyroid hormone production), infiltrative exophthalmos (protruberance of one or both eyes and associated problems) and infiltrative dermopathy (a skin condition usually of the lower extremities). This disorder is the most common cause of...
The initial side effects for me were uncomfortable - pain in my neck and upper chest, rapid heart beat for the first 2 days. But I'm 11 months post-RAI, and I feel great, better than I can remember feeling.
Hope you are doing better today. =-)

My endo said I needed to be away from my pets for 3 days. I think he is conservative. But I think maybe you should have them leave your room to be careful.
Avoid prolonged exposure. Since animals would seem to be exposed like humans, I would practice the same rule with your dogs. It's okay to pet them but don't let them sleep with you or lay next to you for too long.
I don't have any pets right now but gosh that would be hard to do since your pet is used to snuggling or being at your feet when you are around.
How long are you to isolate yourself according to your instructions?
I had to be away from close contact 5-days.
My Dr. said that pets dont live long enought o get the effects of the radiation as it take s 7 years for problems from it arise. I dont know I couldnt get mine to get away from me.As they were so excited I was laying on the couch and not moving around liek a crazy person!!! LOL
It will get easier everyday! It takes time to get to feeling like yourself.
Let us know how its going today!
I would sleep with them and be close for longer then an hour at a time.
wanted to add this !!

Kevin , make sure you flush a lot with water, that will help with the symptoms. Also if there is any rapid fast heartrate, take the beta blockers. This is only a temporary thing and will pass but it is important you flush regular for the first 48 hours.
Dont wait for 'things to happen' as nothing does.
Once the initial 48 hours is over, you will feel a lot better and wonder why you didnt have RAI sooner.
I had RAI 2 years ago and am doing fine and couldnt ask for better health than I have now.
Hypo comes when its ready.
Some can take up to 12 months to go hypo, some can be hypo in weeks. I also have have no side effects from the RAI and suffered a small amount of TED before RAI and all signs of it went within 3 months of having RAI.
Drink plenty of water and you are home free ready to start the journey of hypo which is nothing near as bad or severe as the symptoms before RAI.
Mental exhaustion from the buildup to RAI may be felt too and then you will wonder why you didnt do it sooner.
A positive attitude is the secret to success.
my doctor also prescribed me prednisone
why do i need this?
Because prednisone is still in the "it could prevent" category of research and I don't like prednisone, I went against his advice and didn't take it. I also did not have any form of TED with before RAI so I figured that made it safer for me to make that decision.
But...listen to your endo before anyone else... =-)
Jean
I only took BB after as I was allergic to ATD's but feel I done great and wasn't real sick as you seem to be. Have you takin the Prednisone? That may be why you feel bad just my thought as It will make you feel bad for awhile than hyped up after that so not sure why you would want ot be hyper any more then I am sure you are right now as your system trys to flush all the reserved Iodine hormones through your system. This will take several days to quite down.
I will look it up and if I come up with anything I will post it here!

It's hard though with the animals, because they don't understand, my cat always sleeps with me and didn't understand why he was being pushed away. He probably thought he did something wrong..
Try and exercise as much as you can , even if you just take short strolls or walk around the house and garden.
Try to avoid aspirin as it shouldnt be taken with Graves Disease or anyone with any thyroid problem.
You will go through a stage where different symptoms appear out of nowhere and will confuse you as to whether the RAI has worked.
This normal.
You may feel hyer at some stages and hypo at other stages, this is normal too.
But the hyper is easier to deal with than before RAI.
All in all, honestly speaking, its a pain in the butt but it is well worth it in the long run.
People ask if you will ever get back to being the same person you was before Graves.
I always say no, as you change even your way of thinking but you get back 99% of YOU.
The other 1% is the hell you have been through and dont want back.
Thats my way of explaining it .
Take each day as it comes and you will be fine.
Any sign of coldness and constipation and see your Doctor as you are heading hypo. Any signs of continuous fast heart rate, organise your Doctor to write a prescription for a Beta Blocker.
They are amazing at controlling the fast heart rate and also a temporary thing.
After 4 weeks, you will start to feel as if the clouds have lifted and you are headed 'forward' and not back.
All the best.
Bloodwork back normal!!!!!!
I feel 100% again.
Graves took over two years of my life from me.
not sure if this will last but i'm praying it does.
Thank you all for your help and well wishes, now i have two years of work to do.
