I don't notice that I want to eat all the time with being on the MMI (Methimazole). Did you lose a lot of weight originally and then now getting slowly back on track and putting the weight back on?
Graves' can affect the teeth. It didn't for mine as bad as I thought. I had a bit of bone loss.

Graves' does not affect your teeth - elevated thyroid hormone levels as a result of uncontrolled Graves' can affect your teeth.
When we are hyPER, everything is operating at high speed. Thus, we can experience bone loss and dental issues.
I wasn't eating well off meds cause it made me nauseous, but I had the appetite.
I wanted to eat all the time when I was hyper and I ate ALL the time. I had one day before I was Dx'd with Graves' where I ate a whole box of cereal with milk, was still hungry, ordered a medium pizza from round table (chicken garlic gourmet) and ate the whole thing, was still hungry, then went to a hamburger place and ate a hamburger and fries, and a shake, and was still hungry! My mom had, had a party planned at work, and had a huge pecan pie left over that could have fed like 40 people, and she offered it to me to take to my BF and divide it up for my brothers, etc. I ate the whole thing. The WHOLE pecan pie with an enitre can of whipped cream that could have fed 40 people, after eating a whole box of cereal, an entire pizza and a huge hamburger and fries and a shake and you know what??? I was still hungry!!!! It was like the food just evaporated in my stomach. At that time I just forced myself to stay hungry and stop eating because I knew it was insane to eat anything else, but I just couldn't get enough dairy and salt at that time. It was so weird. I'll never forget it.
I think I was craving the iodine, and I was told by my doctor to limit my daily iodine consumption because it was just like adding fuel to the fire and would make my hyperthyroidism worse.
I was also told to avoid high potassium at that time as well, so if you are hyper, try not to over dose on potassium.
My FT4 was 5x the upper limit when I was diagnosed a few months after my craziest eating day. I had horrible insomnia at that time, too, and started to get muscle tremors and weakness. I had crazy mood swings. I should probably have gone in then to find out what was wrong, but it wasn't until I started to develop tremors that I went in. They were so bad that I was worried that I was getting MS or Parkinson's. I had a stressful even going on in my life, so I thought my crazy eating, insomnia, anxiety and moodswings were all due to that.
After I started to take MMI and propanolol, my crazy appetite went away after my FT4 started to go down.
I hope you feel better, soon! Try to stock your house with things that are good for you to eat in the meantime, until you start to feel better.
Take care,
Hannah
You are telling my story. When you’re hyper you can eat tons of food, and the hunger is never satisfied. I recently started methimazole, and it changed my, It saved my life. For over 3 years, I had the tremors, the heart palpitations, the night sweats, itchy skin, feeling of trash and sand in my eyes. I had it all.
I was on all kinds of antidepressants, sleep meds, and anxiety meds,
Not anymore. My hyperthyroid was misdiagnosed for anxiety and depression. Turns out I had Graves’ disease.
Methimazole was my saving grace. I can now sleep at night with out sleep medication. Heart rate is normal. For the first time in years I feel normal, and not like I’m losing my mind. Of course I had to change my eating habits in order to not gain weight. I was eating whole entire pizzas, before and my body was metabolizing it rapidly leaving me starving.. I haven’t gained any weight since being on methimazole. It is because I’m no longer constantly hungry, and I’ve changed my eating habits (back to the normal way of eating). 3 meals a day and snacks in between. I don’t eat any special foods, I still eat everything as before, I just eat normal portions, and on occasions I have seconds. I think most people gain weight on methimazole, because they still eat the same way as when they were hyperthyroid.
I feel great! I feel reborn, like I have a new life.
Hannah, thank you! for this confirmation. I really am sane.
Kind regards,
Mimi
Also, during one of thyroid storms I didn’t sleep for 5 days. It was at that point I called and begged my doctor to prescribe anything to help me get just ONE nights sleep.
Afterwards I was referred to an Endocrinologist who correctly diagnosed me with Graves. He was my Angel. I had become depressed, withdrawn and introverted. My heart had fallen out. I was a mess.
After treatment with methimazole, I now feel normal. Back to my happy outgoing old self.
Mimi
My hair had fallen out.
