This community is dedicated to grandparents who are the primary caregivers of their grandchildren. In cases where the parents are not willing or able to provide adequate care for their children, grandparents may take on the role of primary caregivers. My father-in-law died last week - he'd been in a nursing home for the past year and had no estate left. He only had a small life insurance policy, so we had to pay for funeral expenses. Now we just were told that a new state law began the first of this year. He died mid-month and will not receive his Social Security check for the month, so he did not pay for his last month in the nursing home. So, we are responsible for paying for his last month in the nursing home. Wow - not only are we supporting our grandson, but now we're responsible for our parent's care, too! By the time we're done paying for all of his expenses, I don't know if we'll have enough money to pay our property taxes. DH has an appointment next week to start selling blood to pay the expenses.

My grandmother passed away February 21, 2001 and my aunt received a letter requesting her February benefits be returned due to her passing before the end of the month all her bills had been paid, her monthly food had been bought and there wasnt anything left. That is crazy I guess we need a one month reserve of our expenses so if we pass before the end of the month we wont burden our love ones. Heaven knows the government isnt going to give anything they arent forced to, but they take from us without even asking
