I realize guardianship is not permanent but it is enough that we would need to go to court in order to change it. At this time, that's enough for me. I figure if our dd is determined enough to go to court and let herself be investigated (we would demand hair follicle testing and I still document every interaction, take screen shots of texts, fb, etc. and she's only seen gd once in 2 years) , then I might have some peace of mind.
Child protection was involved twice with our gd. Once at birth, she had drugs in her system, they did very little. The second time is when husband and I were on vacation in Northern MN and our dd assaulted her bf (gd's father) in gd's presence (gd had a cut on her head, both parents denied she was injured in the fight even though the wound was bleeding when they arrived). Dd was arrested, had an order of protection, she could not be with gd or her bf...was convicted and AGAIN, child protection did little. To which, our lawyer said, it was because they resided in our home and we told child protection and the police we (husband and I) would protect gd at all costs.
So far Pinky has said that she will go along with it, since it is being done for Social Security benefits. (I hate doing this, but we haven't gotten a dime in child support from any bio and could not have anyway - and the only way the kids can get benefits is if we adopt them.) In their case nothing will change; they will still have our last name, Pinky will still be Pinky, etc. etc. The kids are fine with it after thinking and talking about it for more than a year, so we're confident we should move forward.
