I have been on and off this site several times over the last few years. It has always been helpful for me. I have permanent custody of my ten year old GS for last five years. My son and my GS mother were divorced before my GS was born. Both were addicts and unfit parents.
My wife and I won custody with supervised visitation through the safe program. Neither parent showed up. Mom is an addict and a whore. Only cares about herself but tries to act like she is a real mother. She is one who has had three boys from three different men and has lost all of them in court. Yet occasionally she will call and act like she is the greatest mom who loves her kids and wants to take them to all the fun places that their is to go. She never does because no one will allow her to take the kids anywhere. She does not pay her child support to any of the three. She does not ever have the same phone number more than a few months and no idea where she lives. We seldom hear from her but I would love to have her out of my life.
My GS has done great during the five years he has been with us. He is a kind, loving individual who never wants to hurt anyone's feeling. I know he wishes he had a normal life and he also does miss his mother. He gets upset with her false promises and is aware of how unreliable she is. He also knows that the judge listen to the evidence and felt he would be better off with us than her. He loves living with us but I can tell that he is beginning to question if he really wants to go by our rules because if he could go back to his mother (which wont happen) there are no rules there. Our rules are simple: No lying, stealing or cheating. He has those down no problem. The big rule is most important. School work. It comes before all else. Finish homework correctly and you get more play time after school with friends. If it is incorrect, then you get less time to play. Not asking much at all but for the first time I see him starting to wish he didn't have rules to go by. He seems to think he might like living with his mother again.
What I found strange was that before we got him, he had no rules, no steady home for longer than a few months. He had no structure at all. When he came to us we gave him structure and he thrived under it. A marked improvement in every category. Why the change? So why now question it? Am I losing him? Is there something I can do better? He has a great life that any child should be happy to have. I can't let him turn into either of his parents. I have tried to lead him down the right paths. I just feel that he thinks his parents don't go by rules so why should he. Any suggestions? Thanks

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
You could be describing my husband's daughter, Pinky. That is her to a "T." She'll be 38 soon, and no sign of cleaning up.
I've seen issues come out in our two eldest granddaughters as they approached 11 years old. The eldest began cutting and the middle girl is depressed. Both are in counseling, and the eldest has completely turned herself around. The middle one sort of began acting up as her older sister straighten out - apparently that's typical.
We're hoping the youngest, our grandson, avoids many of these issues. Unlike his sisters, he didn't experience the chaos of Pinky's life with various sugar daddies, moving every other month, lax school attendance, etc. So far he's a wonderful kid - but he does not like schoolwork. He does it, but needs to be reminded all the time. He was diagnosed with a borderline case of ADD (no HD), and he seems to be gradually learning to overcome it.
I'd say just stick to your schedules, and keep reassuring him that he has the stability and love he needs with you. There may come a time when counseling could help. I was never big on it, but the right counselor can be a godsend!
At times it gets hard and I worry too much. Mostly when having to deal with either his mother or father with their pathetic attempts to get involved or lack of attempts. Honestly I am not sure what is better for him but I am leaning towards thinking I wish they would stay away completely and stop the rollercoaster ride we are put through.
When I think it through over a good cup of coffee while reading these replies this morning, I realize how fortunate I am to be raising such a good grandson. He is not openly rebelling the rules, he is only questioning or testing them. You are right. That is normal for a child his age. I worry way too much. Thanks for helping me get my head on straight once gain.
With our middle child, she has to sit where we can see her and do her homework before dinner. I check it, and it it's finished she can take the Chromebook into her room. If she fails to turn in an assignment or fails a quiz, she has to leave it on the table. Same goes for her iPod.
So far that has worked like a charm!
I know with the 7 yr old gd we go through spells where she pushes and pushes. She is pushing and testing limits to see if I/we will give up/in on her like her mom has.
Currently, she is striking out at her "papa" as he is driving OTR and only home briefly on the weekends. What used to be good times is now a war zone due to her behavior.
Hang in there! You are NOT a lone!
I pray for healing for all of our children and strength and grace for us.
