Gout Support Group
Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in joints. It is an intensely painful disease, which in most cases affects only one joint (monoarthritis), most commonly the big toe. The classic picture is of excruciating and sudden pain, swelling, redness, warmness and stiffness in the joint. Low-grade fever may also be present.
Warfarin administration increases uric acid concentrations in plasma.

Abstract
The effect of warfarin administration on plasma uric acid was investigated. A representative sample of patients on long-term warfarin treatment had a significantly higher concentration of uric acid in plasma than did age-matched patients with comparable plasma urea concentrations who were not taking warfarin.
In women, this association was observed only in patients with normal values for plasma urea, not in those with high values. In contrast, in men this association was present in both groups (normal and high plasma urea). In a longitudinal study involving patients, their plasma uric acid significantly increased after warfarin administration.
There was no significant change in the renal clearance of uric acid after a single dose of warfarin in normal, healthy volunteers; this contrasts with the increase observed with other coumarin anticoagulants. Our findings suggest that the increase in plasma uric acid noted with warfarin administration is probably due to an increase in uric acid production and may predispose to gout those patients who are on long-term therapy with warfarin.

My 6mo twin DD's are EBF and just started rice cereal on the first. Everything has been going fine except this morning one of them had a diaper rash (lots of redness around her anus). I read this as one of the signs of an allergy. BUT I did just buy a different brand diaper yesterday (which they have used randomly before w/no issues). Do you think its the cereal or the diaper? Im ready to start...
I'm sure that it's not a strong one or everyone on warfarin would get gout----- but it's there.
How was your gout handled, if I may ask? Did it last a long time?
warfarin can make joint problems and i am that case. because of warfarin i got arthritis and as you know gout is also some form of arthritis...
Not everyone who takes warfarin/coumodin will get gout /arthritis etc. but (unfortunately) i am not in that group..
The drug interactions list I check is being cagey about interaction with warfarin, probably because it's fairly new.
I had my uric acid checked, but not for a couple of weeks, when the pain in my thumb area was getting a little better. (It was normal.)
Does anyone know if the blood test for uric acid is almost 100 % a certainty?
