Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in joints. It is an intensely painful disease, which in most cases affects only one joint (monoarthritis), most commonly the big toe. The classic picture is of excruciating and sudden pain, swelling, redness, warmness and stiffness in the joint. Low-grade fever may also be present.
Hi all you fellow gout sufferers,
I think my gout is caused by sleep apnea as it doesn't seem to matter what I eat or drink. I've tried some preventive medicine for gout that I want to share with you all -- I'm not saying it will work for everybody but it seems to be helping me.
This year, I've been religiously taking cod liver oil -- 4 tablets in the morning. I did this for other health benefits but since doing so, I have noticed a reduction in the frequency and severity of gout attacks. I have read that there are things in the oil which coat the joints reducing inflamation.
I suspect that fish oil tablets will have similar results. There is a relatively new extract out for arthritis -- Mobicosa. It's a natural extract of the New Zealand Greenlipped Muscle and while it does not say anything about helping gout, I wouldn't mind betting it might. I have a friend who is a triathlete and he swears by this as helping his knees in the running stages. Gout is a form of arthritis and this might protect the joints. I'm going to give it a go. I'm not saying these things will work for everybody but they seem to have helped me as taking the cod liver oil was the only thing I had changed in my lifestyle (I'm overweight, I don't exercise and for the last 3 months have been drinking 4 bottles of beer per night!). I didn't start to notice the effects of Cod lIver Oil until after about 3 months -- so you need to perservere a bit.
Anyway, my 2 cents worth.

Beer is greatly contributing to high uric acid. Please help yourself at least by treating yourself if you don't want to adjust any contributing causes. I take Allopurinol and have NO gout now. You can get it for $10(3 month supply) as a generic!
