Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the accumulation of uric acid crystals in joints. It is an intensely painful disease, which in most cases affects only one joint (monoarthritis), most commonly the big toe. The classic picture is of excruciating and sudden pain, swelling, redness, warmness and stiffness in the joint. Low-grade fever may also be present.
Most gout attacks can be stopped in a few minutes, a few hours, or a few days , by having a shot of steroids, e.g.. methylprednisolone, 80 mg given in muscle. This can be done at an Emergency or at her doctor's office.
The second slower method is to take an EFFECTIVE dosage of an NSAID. More detailed info can be found by Googling using key phrase "Emergency Gout Treatments".
After the attack has subsided, keep taking a low dose NSAID for prophylaxis. Then a few week later, start taking a uric acid (UA) lowering drug such as Allopurinol to lower her UA store in the body, while keep taking prophylactic NSAID to prevent gout attacks.
Find a good rheumatologist and let him/her take care of the problem.
Wish your mom get well soon.
I ate pistachios again and had another flare up.
In my case I’m pretty sure that there is a major correlation between my gout and consuming pistachios.
I’m in pain now which is why I went searching the web for info and cures.
